Tianmen Gorge Scenic Area of Houhe in Wufeng is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction. It lies within Houhe National Nature Reserve in the southwestern part of Wufeng County, Hubei Province, and covers the core zone of the reserve. The planned area of the scenic spot is approximately 12.9 square kilometres, and it takes its name from the magnificent Tianmen Gorge at the entrance.
Boasting a wide variety of landscapes and numerous scenic spots, the area is dominated by natural scenery including towering precipitous peaks, remote mountain valleys and primeval forests.
The most remarkable plant communities, namely the rare precious tree group, Sycopsis sinensis community and Chinese yew community, form a spectacular assembly of relict plants along the 30th parallel north. The rare precious tree community is praised as "unique nationwide and rarely seen worldwide".
The sightseeing route forms a 4.2-kilometre loop consisting of mountain plank walkways, suspension bridges and riverside footpaths. There are 33 scenic sites of varying sizes, including Hundred-Step Slope, Immortal Source Bridge, Thin Blade Ridge and Three-Leaping Spring.
The scenic area is 168 kilometres away from Shennongjia Nature Reserve in Hubei and 116 kilometres north of Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province. All three places sit along the meridian of 110°29′ E. The core scenic zone covers 2.9 square kilometres. Together with Baixi River Wetland Park and Duling Outdoor Experience Zone, it makes up the complete Houhe Ecotourism Zone.
The climbing zone on Thin Blade Ridge, together with five bridges named after the legend of five immortals surnamed Zhang — Immortal Source Bridge, Immortal Wish Bridge, Immortal Fate Bridge, Immortal Garden Bridge and Immortal Round Bridge — embody the profound cultural heritage of Houhe.
Among them, the Immortal Source Suspension Bridge stretches 148 metres long with a clear span of 118 metres and a width of 1.56 metres. The vertical drop from the bridge deck to the valley bottom reaches 98 metres, making it the second longest suspension bridge after the one in Yalong Bay, Hainan.
In summer, the concentration of negative oxygen ions in Tianmen Gorge reaches 12,800 per cubic centimetre, ten times the fresh air standard set by the World Health Organization. It is known as an earthly paradise for health preservation and leisure, as well as an ideal longevity resort blessed with a natural oxygen bar.
Thanks to dense vegetation and abundant rainfall, the average temperature here is much lower than in surrounding regions, earning it the reputation of "Pure Immortal Source, Refreshing Houhe".
The area’s distinctive biodiversity, mysterious primeval atmosphere, graceful rural landscapes, profound ethnic customs and authentic Tujia delicacies jointly create an unrivalled land of "unspoiled forests and pure nature".
