Chaibu Creek Grand Canyon Scenic Area is situated in the eastern part of Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County, Hubei Province. It adjoins Wulingyuan in the south, stretches to the Qingjiang River in the north, borders the Three Gorges in the east, and connects with mountain villages of western Hubei in the west. With a hundred li of secluded gorges and three thousand strange peaks, it is hailed as an unparalleled scenic wonder in Central China.
Covering a total area of 80 square kilometres, it is a national forest park and a national AAAA-level tourist resort featuring precipitous stone forests, quiet valleys with clear streams, primeval ecosystems and authentic Tujia folk culture. It integrates leisure holidays and outdoor development activities.
The scenic area boasts more than 130 natural landscapes characterised by five qualities: wonder, grace, peril, seclusion and wildness. It is divided into four major scenic zones: Dawan Pass, Tanzi Pass, Jiao Pass and Duanshan Pass, plus an inner-valley ecological reserve. At present, Dawan Pass and Tanzi Pass are officially open to tourists.
The grand canyon features typical karst landforms with unique terrain and abundant biological resources. Wei Xiao'an, former Director of the Planning and Finance Department of the National Tourism Administration, praised this land as "combining the grandeur of northern scenery and the elegance of the south, and presenting four seasons of beautiful views in one place".
Sheer cliffs tower on both sides of the valley, through which a clear brook winds its way. After hundreds of millions of years of weathering, erosion and rock collapse, countless oddly-shaped peaks and rocks have taken shape. The pictographic rocks are varied in form and spark the imagination. Paired with beautiful folk legends, they become vivid and picturesque.
The most stunning natural formations include the Divine Writing Brush Peak, Pen Holder Mountain, Kissing Stones, Guanyin of Holy Water and Sparrow Rock, all masterpieces of nature that leave visitors in awe.
