The Baixi River originates from Dushan Mountain in Wufeng County. It flows into Shimen County of Hunan Province at Leidashi, then joins the Lishui River before emptying into Dongting Lake, making it one of the lake’s headwaters.

Steep cliffs tower along the river valley, which is covered with thick forests and tall bamboo groves. The river winds along mountain contours with crystal-clear water. The area features typical karst landforms, boasting jagged peaks, deep secluded gorges, fantastic mountains and rivers, distinctive rustic dwellings, profound Tujia culture and simple local customs. It is praised as a living fossil of primitive villages that retain untouched mountains, waters and ecosystems.

Due to its remote location, no paved roads have reached Baixi River yet. Restricted transportation has preserved this ancient and mysterious mountain village intact. The all-timber Tujia residential clusters, together with pristine, tranquil and picturesque natural scenery and authentic ethnic customs, attract tourists who linger on and never want to leave
