The Earth Goddess is the witness who recorded all the good deeds that the Sakyamuni Buddha had done in His past lives. According to legend, Mara, King of Demons, tried to stop Sakyamuni from attaining Enlightenment. Mara gathered all his soldier demons and vermin to kill Him. The immense army of demons rallied in front of Him, the Buddha said to the King of Demons: “I have realized the profound nature of the Dharma, and acquired unlimited merit and wisdom from uncountable past lives. Trying to attack me is useless. Do you want to be dashed yourself to the ground?” The King of Demons then asked: “Can you prove your unlimited merit?” Here, the Earth Goddess came up from the earth, held Her hair and from it flowed the water which represented the Buddha’s good deeds from uncountable past lives, sweeping away the army of demons.
