The Bell Tower is another construction that the Dai old forest monasteries used to keep people informed of the times of day. It became common in the early times of the spread of Buddhism in Sipsong Panna, and in Dai language it is called “Honglagang”. In the past, all monks lived in the forest, and the bell tower was built beside the monks´ dwellings. The monks take turns to ring the bell in order to inform of monastic affairs, although the main function of the bell is to call the monks for chanting, and so it is generally rung in the early morning and at dusk.
