Wuyi Mountain Food Guide
Wild Game
Wuyi Mountain cuisine mainly features wild game including snakes, wild hares, wild goats and muntjac, alongside pork, fresh fish, poultry eggs, vegetables, beans, shiitake mushrooms, red russula and bamboo shoots.
Local signature dishes include shredded bamboo shoots with minced chicken, orchid-flavored shredded snake, chrysanthemum grass carp, loach with vermicelli, and hometown tofu. Other popular folk home-cooked dishes are pickled potherb mustard, smoked goose (the best from Langu), river snails, smoked field rats (the finest from Shangmei), pan-fried tofu, stir-fried wheat beans, carp cooked with bean pods, and Lord Wen’s Vegetable.
Themed Feasts
Wuyi Mountain boasts a variety of distinctive themed feasts:
- The Manting Feast, a legendary immortal banquet steeped in folklore;
- The Bagua Feast, a tradition enduring for 800 years;
- The Snake Feast, offering an extensive array of incredibly delicious snake dishes.
If you enjoy alcohol, local brews such as Wuyi Liuxiang Wine, Wuyi Qinquan Wine, chrysanthemum wine, five-pace pit viper wine and October White Rice Wine are excellent picks.
Tips
- Do not consume any nationally protected wild animals or plants. Even if invited by others to try them, you should refuse to stay law-abiding.
- Restaurants recommended by chartered drivers or tour guides usually charge higher prices. Remember to bargain; you may choose other eateries if the quote is unreasonable.
- Set menus are more cost-effective than ordering dishes à la carte. Even with a set menu, you may check the list in advance and swap unwanted dishes for similar-priced favorites, which delivers more value than ordering separately.
Dining in Scenic Spots
Farmhouse restaurants at the foot of Tiger Roaring Rock serve individual dishes priced at 20, 30 or 40 RMB each. You may negotiate a set meal with your guide for 15 RMB per person, which includes five dishes and one soup: fish cooked in bamboo tubes, wild mushrooms, shrimp omelette, braised tofu, fish head tofu soup, and pork rib soup with fresh bamboo shoots.
Snacks inside the Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area are cheap. Zixi Rice Noodles here resemble thickened Guilin rice noodles.
Dining options are only available near Tongmu Village within the nature reserve. It is advisable to bring your own food; if you dine locally, bargain aggressively as all items in restaurants are negotiable.
