Introduction to Nanping Transportation

Nanping City lies in northern Fujian Province, at the southeastern foot of the Wuyi Mountains. It borders Jiangxi Province to the west and Zhejiang Province to the north, serving as the northern gateway of Fujian. It administers four county-level cities (Shaowu, Wuyishan, Jian’ou and Jianyang), five counties (Shunchang, Pucheng, Guangze, Songxi and Zhenghe) and Yanping District. Covering a total area of 26,300 square kilometers, accounting for roughly one-fifth of Fujian’s landmass, it is the largest administrative region in the province. The city has a total population of 3 million and fiscal revenue of 2.283 billion yuan.

Since the Ninth Five-Year Plan period, Nanping’s transportation sector has achieved rapid growth. By the end of 2004, the total mileage of highways open to traffic across the city reached 10,844.728 kilometers, about one-fifth of Fujian’s total highway mileage. Breakdown by road grade is as follows: 27.932 kilometers of national trunk expressways, 562.579 kilometers of national highways, 809.662 kilometers of provincial highways, 1,511.026 kilometers of county-level highways, 5,446.128 kilometers of township highways, and 2,487.401 kilometers of special-purpose highways. There are 1,943 highway bridges with a total linear length of 62,748.60 meters, and 14 highway tunnels (excluding expressway tunnels) stretching 4,314.50 meters in total. The highway density stands at 41.11 kilometers per 100 square kilometers.

At the turn of the new millennium, Nanping launched full-scale expressway construction. On November 3, 2004, Phase I of the Beijing-Fuzhou Expressway Nanping Section was completed and opened to traffic, putting an end to Nanping’s history of having no expressways. With the completion and opening of Phase II of the Beijing-Fuzhou Expressway at the end of 2005 and the full commencement of construction on the Pucheng-Nanping Expressway, Nanping ushered in a new boom in highway development. Meanwhile, preliminary work for the Ningde-Wuyishan Expressway, Wuyishan-Shaowu Expressway and Songxi-Nanping Expressway was fully underway. Once these four expressways are finished, all ten counties, county-level cities and districts under Nanping’s jurisdiction will be connected to the national expressway network, with links to neighboring provinces and cities to integrate into the nationwide highway system.

Supported by increasingly improved transportation infrastructure, Nanping’s transport industry has sustained steady expansion. The city owns 13,924 various operating motor vehicles, including 1,471 passenger buses, 1,074 urban taxis, 5,725 freight trucks and 5,654 other motor vehicles. There are 12 passenger transport stations in total: 2 first-class stations, 8 second-class stations and 2 third-class stations.
