Caodun embodies a peaceful, simple rural life filled with age-old rustic charm, an idyllic haven far removed from worldly strife. The Wuyi Mountain Grand Canyon Drifting Zone sits along the main route connecting the scenic area and nature reserve, originating from Huanggang Mountain, the "Roof of East China". The canyon stretches 14 kilometers with a relative elevation drop of 150 meters. The 6-kilometer rafting section takes roughly 80 minutes. Kayaking through the canyon delivers wild, thrilling natural adventure and heart-pounding excitement. Zhu Xi was a renowned Neo-Confucian scholar and educator of the Southern Song Dynasty. Over his 71-year lifespan, he spent more than 40 years in northern Fujian, leaving footprints across every corner of Wuyi Mountain. As the saying goes: One cannot truly understand Zhu Xi without visiting Wuyi Mountain.

Travel 51 kilometers southeast of downtown to Wufu Town and its Xingxian Ancient Street, first built in the mid-Jin Dynasty with a history of over 1,700 years. Three key cultural sites linked to Zhu Xi line the street: Xingxian Academy, Zhu Xi’s Community Granary and Zhu Xi’s Lane. Together with the ruins of Pingshan Academy at the foot of Pingshan Mountain and Ziyang Building in Fuqian Village, they form a complete Neo-Confucian cultural route in Wufu. The Zhu Xi Memorial Hall is another excellent spot to trace the great philosopher’s legacy.

Wuyi Mountain is a sacred Taoist mountain in China, designated the 16th Taoist Grotto Heaven in the late Tang Dynasty. The well-preserved Peach Blossom Spring Taoist Temple still stands here today. Buddhism first arrived at Wuyi Mountain in the Tang Dynasty, with active temples including Tianxin Yongle Temple, Miaolian Temple and Ruiyan Temple.

From the Tang to Song dynasties, the three core traditional Chinese philosophies — Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism — converged on Wuyi Mountain. Zhu Xi resided here for over 50 years, building a scholarly system centered on Confucian thought while integrating Buddhist and Taoist theories, reaffirming the orthodox status of Confucianism as the core spiritual pillar of the Chinese nation.

More than 400 cliff stone carvings survive across Wuyi Mountain. The most famous inscription, carved on Wan Dui Peak, reads "Cave of Southern Neo-Confucianism". Each character measures two meters square, bold and elegant, a historic emblem marking the mountain’s legacy as a cradle of Neo-Confucian learning.

According to Records of Wuyi Mountain, successive dynasties constructed as many as 187 temples, shrines, palaces, academies and mountain villas here, alongside 117 pavilions, terraces and multi-story buildings. These architectural complexes feature distinctive northern Fujian mountain styles, celebrated worldwide for their harmonious natural aesthetics. Today, iconic ancient architecture sites open to visitors include the age-old Wuyi Palace, the spectacular Ancient Han City Ruins and Wuyi Academy.
