Constructed in July 1987 and opened to visitors starting on Pure Brightness Day 1989, the stele complex consists of stele pavilions, covered stele corridors and natural stone tablet formations built to follow the mountain terrain, winding and twisting with distinctive charm. The plaque "Jinggangshan Forest of Steles" was handwritten by celebrated calligrapher Shu Tong.
Tablets bear inscriptions from veteran Red Army soldiers who fought at Jinggangshan, original calligraphy by Party and state leaders, and brush works by renowned cultural figures and calligraphers. Rich in ideological connotation and exquisite in calligraphic artistry, it has become a landmark new attraction in the Ciping scenic zone.
Dajing lies seven kilometers west of Ciping, connected by paved road. The "Five Wells of Jinggangshan" refer to five mountain basin villages encircled by peaks, shaped like wells: Dajing, Xiaojing, Zhongjing, Shangjing and Xiajing. Dajing, the largest village, hosted countless revolutionary activities led by Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Chen Yi, Peng Dehuai and Red Army troops.
On October 24, 1927, Mao Zedong led his army to Dajing upon first arriving at Jinggangshan, which later became a permanent Red Army garrison. Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Chen Yi and other leaders repeatedly deployed battles here, crushing multiple Kuomintang military "suppression campaigns".
