Mosquito-Free Village – A Charming Jiangnan Hamlet
Xu Family Village, the famous mosquito-free village, is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces water on the fourth. Villagers travel by rafts and farm on the opposite bank. This ordinary Jiangnan village holds an age-old unsolved mystery: no mosquitoes all year round.
At the end of the Tang Dynasty, ancestor Xiang Yigong of the Xu family came here while hunting. He found his bamboo container of rice, hung on a tree in the morning, was still warm at noon. Believing this place was blessed by divine spirits and an auspicious settlement, he moved his entire family here. The village has flourished for more than 40 generations ever since.
The folk custom museum displays traditional production and daily utensils, reflecting villagers’ toil and joy. Traditional wedding performances showcase the simple yet genuine happiness of ordinary people. A visit here has become a must-do activity for all tourists exploring Longhu Mountain.
