About 45 kilometers from the county seat, it covers 70.58 square kilometers, including 61.58 km² of secondary forest and a 9 km² pure-water Tianquan Lake surrounded by mountains, creating a unique microclimate. It is Jiangsu’s best-preserved and largest wildlife habitat, home to 40+ wild animal species, 170+ bird species, 280+ higher plant species, and nearly 800 types of Chinese medicinal herbs—most being fringe species of northern and southern China, forming a natural gene bank. The area harmoniously integrates mountains, forests, springs, lakes, stones, and caves. It is a National AAAA-Level Scenic Area, a National Agricultural Tourism Demonstration Site, and northern Jiangsu’s first Provincial Tourism Resort. Tieshan Temple Forest Resort and Tianquan Villa offer dining, leisure, entertainment, and fitness. The Purple Mountain Observatory (CAS) Tieshan Temple Observation Base is located here, with its affiliated Xuyi Tieshan Temple Popular Science Observatory opening on July 30, 2001. The Asian-first, world-third asteroid observation telescope is in operation, having discovered 5 asteroids—one (No. 4360) named "Xuyi Star".
