There are many places across China named Thousand-Buddha Cliff, yet the one in Guangyuan is undoubtedly the most valuable.
It stands on the east bank of the Jialing River, 5 kilometers north of downtown Guangyuan, facing Huangze Temple across the river. The ancient perilous stone pavilion Shigui Pavilion is located at the southern end of the cliff.
The cliff statues date back to the Northern Wei Dynasty and were carved over a period of nearly 1,500 years. This is the largest grotto complex in Sichuan. Stretching 388 meters from north to south and rising 84 meters at its highest point, the cliff houses over 400 grottoes and more than 7,000 statues, comparable to the Longmen and Yungang Grottoes.
