Formerly known as Jiameng Pass, Zhaohua Ancient Town is one of the best-preserved ancient towns of the Three Kingdoms period in China. Chapter 65 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms tells the story of Ma Chao’s fierce battle at Jiameng Pass and Liu Bei taking office as Governor of Yizhou. It was here that Zhang Fei fought Ma Chao through the night with torches blazing amid the sound of clashing weapons. Today, the ancient town is peaceful and tranquil. Only the old city walls and relics remind visitors of its glorious past as a strategic stronghold.
