Located 3 kilometers west of downtown Ya'an, Jinfeng Temple faces the Qingyi River in the front and backs onto Mengshan Mountain. The terrain resembles a green dragon winding around a phoenix, creating a serene and elegant environment. It is a time-honored historic site of Ya'an.
First built in the early Tang Dynasty, the temple flourished in the Song Dynasty. It was reconstructed by Monk Zongshou in the first year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty, with a history of more than 600 years to date. It was once renamed Lianhua (Lotus) Temple due to a lotus pond at the foot of the mountain. Later it got the name Jinfeng (Golden Phoenix), for the eastern hillside looks like a flying phoenix and the temple sits right beneath its head.
During the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty, more pavilions, terraces and waterside corridors were added. Two pavilions named Lanhui and Wangyue were built in the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty. A memorial archway was erected during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, and the Arhat Hall was completed in 1987. Today, this ancient Buddhist temple grows increasingly magnificent.
