Construction of Xichang Satellite Launch Center began in 1970, and it was officially put into operation in 1982. In January 1984, China’s first communication satellite was launched from here.
The center consists of the headquarters, a launch site (including the technical area and two launch pads), a general communication station, a command and control center, three tracking and measuring stations, as well as supporting service facilities such as hospitals and hotels.
The launch site is mainly responsible for organizing and conducting launches of geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) satellites for broadcasting, communication and meteorological purposes. Its duties include technical testing, flight measurement, safety control, data processing, information transmission, meteorological support, debris recovery and experimental research.
