Transportation Guide to Xishuangbanna
Air Travel
Currently, direct flights to Jinghong are available from seven cities: Kunming, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lijiang and Dali. As another international airport in Yunnan besides Kunming Changshui International Airport, Xishuangbanna Gasa Airport also operates direct flights to Bangkok, Thailand.
Highway Travel
The highway from Kunming to Jinghong stretches 720 kilometers. The numerous sharp bends along the route result in a long travel time of 18 to 20 hours. For this reason, most long-distance coaches from Kunming to Jinghong are overnight sleeper buses, with deluxe express coaches also in service. Traveling by night helps avoid daytime road congestion and makes itinerary planning more convenient.
Deluxe express coaches are highly recommended for their superior vehicle conditions and faster speed.
During the Spring Festival, bus fares will rise by approximately 15% to 20%.
Water Transport
Jinghong Port is a waterway port. An international shipping route to Vientiane, Laos has been opened, which is now mainly used for cargo transportation.
Local Transportation
Road travel is the only means of transportation within Xishuangbanna Prefecture.
Scenic spots in Xishuangbanna are widely scattered with long distances between them. The roads feature numerous sharp curves, so you will still need to take long-distance buses after arriving in Jinghong. Regular direct shuttle buses run to most tourist sites. If you choose to charter a vehicle, bargaining is advisable.
There are three public bus routes in downtown Jinghong, covering nearly all local scenic spots within the city.
The starting fare for Xiali taxis is 5 yuan, while that for Santana taxis is 7 yuan. All fares are calculated by taxi meters. You may refuse payment and file a complaint with relevant authorities if the driver overcharges. Complaint hotlines are posted inside all taxis.
