Delicious Food on Mount Putuo – Local Cuisine Guide

Seafood and vegetarian temple meals are the two most renowned culinary offerings on Mount Putuo.

Seafood

Mount Putuo boasts an abundant supply of fresh live seafood. You can find yellow croaker, cuttlefish, sea crabs, flower clams, mussels, various shellfish, striped shrimp and a full range of other marine produce.
Apart from dining services in hotels and mountain resorts, restaurants are mainly clustered around Seafood Garden, Front Temple, Rear Temple and South Heavenly Gate.
Seafood Garden houses 52 seafood restaurants in total. It enjoys a solid reputation both domestically and overseas, drawing numerous tourists who travel here specially for seafood.
Note that seafood prices on Mount Putuo tend to be relatively high. By contrast, seafood in nearby Shenjiamen is far more affordable. You can indulge in a hearty seafood feast when transferring boats at Shenjiamen.

Tips

  1. Price ranking (from highest to lowest): Private eateries next to farm stays > Farm stay home dining > Two-star hotels > Shenjiamen
  2. Scalpers solicit customers everywhere around Seafood Garden — ignore them completely. Seafood vendors here often short-weight customers, and prices are no cheaper than those in Shanghai.
  3. Multiple seafood restaurants line Golden Beach in Longwan Village with roughly similar pricing. Always confirm prices before ordering, and stick to common seafood varieties; certain rare types carry steep markups.

Vegetarian Temple Meals

Vegetarian temple meals on Mount Putuo have long won rave reviews from visitors home and abroad. You may enjoy an authentic vegetarian meal inside the temples if you wish.
The three major temples of Mount Putuo (Puji Temple, Fayu Temple and Huiji Temple on Buddha Summit) serve affordable vegetarian breakfast, lunch and dinner, popular among pilgrims and tourists alike.

Meal Hours & Prices

  • Breakfast: 5:30 – 6:30
Puji Temple breakfast costs ¥5 per person, served in tables of eight with four side dishes, congee, steamed rice and steamed buns.
  • Lunch: 10:30 – 11:30
  • Dinner: 16:30 – 17:30
Lunch and dinner pricing: ¥5 per person at Huiji Temple, ¥4 at Purple Bamboo Grove, ¥10 at Puji Temple.
All lunch and dinner sittings seat eight guests per table and start once full. Each set includes four dishes plus one soup, with unlimited rice and soup. You must purchase meal tickets at the entrance of the vegetarian dining hall before eating. Keep voices low during the meal, serve rice according to your appetite, and avoid any food waste.
At Fayu Temple, all three daily vegetarian meals cost only ¥2.5 per person. Each guest receives one bowl containing four or five vegetarian dishes; you may take your food to any empty table. After finishing, bring your tableware to the washing station on the outer corridor.

Tip

Temple breakfast is only available to overnight temple guests. Tourists wishing to try the breakfast vegetarian meal need to book accommodation inside the temple.
