Apart from its long-standing reputation as the site of imperial fengshan rituals and the precipitous Eighteen Turns, the sunrise over Mount Tai stands unrivaled. Streaks of rosy glow stretch across the firmament, and golden sunlight floods the sky, fully embodying the imposing majesty of the foremost among the Five Great Mountains.
The red sun rises silently. Against the indigo horizon, a faint streak of red emerges, faint without magnificent glow at first. The sun climbs slowly, peeking in and out among cloud layers as if time stands still. Presently, rosy rays pierce the dark grey clouds and blue sky. Layer upon layer of cotton-like golden clouds surge forward from the horizon, threaded with streaks of golden radiance. The billowing sea of clouds shimmers with alternating bright and dim sunset hues, sweeping across the heavens. Magnificent indeed is the sunrise over Mount Tai.
Where is the best spot to watch the sunrise on Mount Tai?
The ideal viewing site is the Northward Arching Stone next to the meteorological station.
Riguan Peak is another option. For sunset viewing, the archway on Heavenly Street works well, and Jade Emperor Peak is also a good choice. Temperatures drop sharply before sunrise on the summit; ice may form even in summer. Crowds gather at Jade Emperor Peak, and military overcoats for warmth are easily rented there.
The area around Northward Arching Stone is spacious enough for large groups. It remains safe as long as visitors do not stand too close to the edge.
The Northward Arching Stone is the easternmost point on the mountain top, offering an unobstructed open view with no barriers. The stone itself serves as a perfect foreground for photography. Many classic shots feature people seemingly holding up the stone, or standing beside it with outstretched hands cupping the rising sun.
Riguan Peak has limited space and can become dangerous when packed with tourists. Although Jade Emperor Peak is the highest point, the meteorological station and the Northward Arching Stone block the eastern view, making it less suitable for watching sunrise.
Small eateries cluster around the Northward Arching Stone, serving hot noodles, congee, fried dough sticks, pancakes and wontons at reasonable prices. You can grab a hot meal right after watching the sunrise.
