Wulian Mountain Scenic Area is located in the southeast of Wulian County, Rizhao, a coastal city in the southeast of Shandong Province.
It is 130 kilometres from Qingdao, a famous summer resort to the east; 25 kilometres from downtown Rizhao, the eastern starting point of the New Eurasian Continental Bridge to the south; 110 kilometres from Weifang, the City of Kites to the north; and it adjoins Fulai Mountain Scenic Area (home to Asia’s king ginkgo tree) to the west.
It enjoys the reputation: Hualian in Taiwan, Wulian in Shandong.
The scenic zone consists of two parts: Wulian Mountain and Jiuxian Mountain. The main peak rises to 515.7 metres above sea level.
It features abundant natural and cultural landscapes, celebrated for seven unique charms: wonder, grace, peril, strangeness, seclusion, spaciousness and profound mystery.
Wulian Mountain is the largest wild medicinal herb bank in Shandong Province, as well as the provincial base for wild azaleas. It is designated a provincial-level scenic area, provincial forest park and Buddhist centre.
The ten-thousand-mu wild azalea garden, the Dragon Gorge, and Huguo Wanshou Guangming Temple — an imperial monastery known as the “Path to Heaven” — are famed all across the country.
After decades of development, Wulian Mountain has grown into the largest ecological scenic zone in southeast Shandong.
The best visiting seasons are spring, summer and autumn.
In late spring, ten thousand mu of wild azaleas burst into full bloom, spreading all over the hills like colourful brocade and rosy glow, enchanting every tourist.
