Must-see Attractions in Wuyuan & Their Unique Features
Qingyuan Village
Qingyuan remains undeveloped with zero commercialisation, so entry is free. Tickets for other villages range from 15 to 50 yuan.
The village is well-preserved with almost no modern damage, laid out in the shape of a boat. It receives relatively few tourists, mostly photography enthusiasts. It truly deserves the title of the most beautiful countryside. Rape flowers cover the mountains, dotted with white Huizhou-style houses. Peach blossoms line brooks flowing beneath small stone bridges. (You may refer to the attached photos.)
An ancient poem perfectly depicts the scenery:
Old trees stand above low cottages;
The sinking sun gilds distant hills.
Smoke curls above treetops like silk ribbons;
A stream loops round the whole village.
This idyllic pastoral landscape features terraced fields, brooks, ancient trees, wooden bridges and cowherds, representing the typical rural scenery south of the Yangtze River. The full view can only be enjoyed by looking down from Jiangling above the village.
There is a 20-kilometre ancient trail connecting Qingyuan to Zheyuan.
A 5-kilometre ancient post road leads from Qingyuan to Gaoshan Pinghu Lake (Duanxin Reservoir, the largest reservoir in Wuyuan). Paved with bluestone slabs, the road has an ancient pavilion every 2.5 kilometres, as well as a natural spring stop. Mountain spring water flows through bamboo tubes into a stone pool, with two spare bamboo tubes left for travellers. The spring water is sweet and refreshing. Wild herbs grow along both sides of the trail; you can only appreciate the natural charm by walking the path yourself. Gaoshan Pinghu Lake is ideal for overnight camping; it gets rather hot during daytime.
Rainbow Bridge
Wuyuan is famous for covered bridges, which are roofed structures offering shelter for pedestrians on rainy days.
Rainbow Bridge, built in the Song Dynasty, is the most iconic covered bridge in Wuyuan. Its name comes from a Tang poem:
Two rivers enclose a mirror-like lake;
Twin bridges arch like rainbows.
Stretching 140 metres long and over 3 metres wide, the bridge has four piers and five arches, with 11 covered pavilions furnished with stone tables and benches.
Surrounded by green mountains and clear blue water, the scenic spot allows visitors to pause and fully appreciate the natural beauty of Wuyuan.
Mandarin Duck Lake
Mandarin Duck Lake is located in Fuchun Town in western Wuyuan, 44 kilometres from Wuyuan County and 41 kilometres from Jingdezhen.
Covering 1,250 mu of crystal-clear water surrounded by green hills, it is China’s only habitat for wild mandarin ducks. The fruits of broad-leaved trees along the lake provide abundant food. Around 2,000 pairs of mandarin ducks spend the winter here every year. When flocks gather on the lake, the view of red beaks and emerald plumage is spectacular.
Upper and Lower Xiaoqi
Upper and Lower Xiaoqi rank among the most picturesque villages in Wuyuan.
Upper Xiaoqi boasts hillside farmland. A walk uphill toward Jiangling leads to rolling pastoral scenery, widely regarded as the finest view across Wuyuan.
Lower Xiaoqi is encircled by winding brooks. Take a bus bound for Duanxin from Wangkou Town, turn onto a dirt road past Maotan Village, and you will reach the village shaded by ancient trees. Two streams converge here, creating a quiet and peaceful atmosphere
