As the seat of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Jiegu Town is famed as the land of sacred mountains, source of great rivers, home to wild yaks and hometown of song and dance. Its Tibetan name means "a hub for goods distribution".
In history, nearly 90,000 loads of tea were transported annually from Yazhou in western Sichuan to Jiegu. Among them, 50,000 loads were further delivered to Lhasa in Xizang, and the remaining 40,000 were sold in Mongolian and Tibetan settlements across southern Qinghai. For centuries, it has served as a vital trade and transportation junction linking Qinghai, Sichuan and Xizang.
The average altitude of Yushu City is around 4,500 meters, with over 900 surrounding peaks rising above 5,000 meters. Countless freshwater lakes and rivers spread across the whole region.
Vast alpine meadows stretch around Jiegu Town, and the Yushu Grassland is celebrated for its unique pastoral charm. When the annual Horse Racing Festival kicks off, the whole town is immersed in joyous celebrations. Melodious and impassioned songs linger in the air, while dancers perform the traditional Yi dance with colorful long sleeves flowing gracefully. Held from July 25 to August 1 every year, this grand event is Qinghai’s largest Tibetan folk festival, featuring a distinctive style different from local Flower Festivals elsewhere.
