Nestled at the eastern end of the southern foot of the Qilian Mountains, the park has an average altitude of around 1,800 meters and an annual mean temperature of about 15°C. It enjoys a pleasant climate with mild winters and cool summers.
Blocked by the Qilian Mountains, cold air currents from Siberia traveling southeast along the Hexi Corridor have limited impact on Qinghai. Consequently, the southern slopes of the Qilian Mountains on Qinghai’s side are covered with vast primeval forests stretching for hundreds of kilometers.
Located in the northeastern part of Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, Qinghai Province, Huzhu Beishan National Forest and Geopark is 78 kilometers away from Weiyuan Town, the county seat, and 110 kilometers from Xining, the provincial capital. It is a mountain-type scenic resort.
Covering a total area of 1,127 square kilometers, the park features altitudes ranging from 2,100 meters to 4,308 meters. Its forest coverage rate reaches 64.3%, with a standing forest volume of 4.2886 million cubic meters. Endowed with abundant flora and fauna, it is hailed as a natural kingdom of plants and animals.
The forest area boasts magnificent mountains, deep and narrow gorges, steep cliffs and towering perilous peaks. Ridges and valleys alternate, with rapid streams running along the valley floors. With lofty peaks, crystal-clear waters and distinctive plateau scenery, the geopark is an ideal destination for summer retreats, health vacations and popular science expeditions. It is one of the first national ecological education bases under the Mother River Protection Campaign, and the only ecological park in Qinghai dominated by forest landscapes.
Home to some of the best-preserved natural forests in Qinghai, the park hosts 981 species of higher plants and nearly 200 species of wild animals. Influenced by climate, altitude and geographical location, the natural forests present distinct vertical zonation with clear distribution belts. Coniferous forests, broad-leaved forests, alpine shrubs and alpine meadows together form diverse forest landscapes. As one of the most well-preserved ecological areas on the Qinghai Plateau, it is reputed as a plant kingdom and natural zoo. The mountain range acts as an oasis, wetland, cool land and water source amid the arid region.
The landform is grand with picturesque mountains and waters, clear skies and fresh air. The annual average temperature is 4.8°C. It features long winters, short summers, mild springs and cool autumns, fully embodying plateau climatic characteristics.
