Bird Island lies in the western bay of Qinghai Lake, at the head of the delta where the Buha River flows into the lake. It is one of the most popular attractions around Qinghai Lake, named after the hundreds of thousands of migratory birds that dwell here, including bar-headed geese, whooper swans, seagulls and brown-headed geese.
There are two islands of different sizes facing each other by the lakeshore, one in the east and the other in the west. The smaller western island is Haixi Hill, also known as Small West Hill or Egg Island. The larger eastern one is Haixipi Island. It is also called Cormorant Island because tens of thousands of cormorants make it their home.
Birds start arriving at the islands from April. May to July is the best time for birdwatching. In September, you can witness flocks of bar-headed geese flying south in formation like the Chinese character "ren". The ideal period to watch whooper swans is from November to February every year.
