Must-Try Local Delicacies in Haibei
Haibei is an autonomous prefecture with a large Tibetan population in Qinghai Province, boasting abundant tourist attractions. Some are ancient cultural sites well-preserved with relics of age-old architectures, while others are newly developed scenic spots, such as the Hundred-Li Rapeseed Flower Sea — the largest rapeseed planting base in northern China, drawing swarms of admiring visitors every day. Other renowned scenic spots include Xianmi National Forest Park and the spectacular Heihe Grand Canyon. Every year, countless tourists from all over the country travel to these sites. After feasting their eyes on the breathtaking landscapes, most visitors will sample the distinctive local food here.
Street Snacks of Haibei
Menyuan in Haibei is packed with unique street food, among which Lamb Wrapped in Pancakes is the most famous local specialty.
Only one-to-three-month-old Tibetan milk lambs are selected for this dish. The meat of such young lambs is exceptionally tender, fresh and delicious. After the lamb is slaughtered and cleaned, it is cut into sections. Heat oil in a wok, stir-fry the lamb chunks until they turn pale white, then pour in clear water to simmer. Once the lamb is fully cooked, wrap the meat with scallion pancakes or plain flour flatbreads before serving.
Other Famous Dishes in Haibei
Steamed Beef Tendons are another iconic delicacy, a classic Hui ethnic dish of Haibei. This dish can be found in halal restaurants nationwide, yet authentic local steamed beef tendons can only be tasted right here in Haibei.
It features a light, non-greasy flavor profile. Texturally, beef tendons resemble sea cucumbers, though their nutritional compositions differ greatly.
