What Local Delicacies and Specialties Does Liaoyuan Have?

Liaoyuan is a prefecture-level city in south-central Jilin Province, located on the transitional zone between the branch ranges of the Changbai Mountains and the Songliao Plain. It boasts a long history and profound cultural heritage. Human settlements date back to the Bronze Age, and it ranks as one of the vital birthplaces of the Manchu people. Liaoyuan also holds the reputed titles of "Hometown of Chinese Sika Deer", "Hometown of Chinese Errenzhuan Opera" and "Hometown of Chinese Peasant Paintings".
What precautions should you take when traveling to Liaoyuan? I will elaborate on them below for your reference, hoping to offer some help for your trip. Before your visit, it is essential to learn about the local climate. Liaoyuan features a semi-humid temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons: spring sees volatile weather with rapid temperature rises and dry air; summer is warm, humid and rainy; autumn is mild, cool, short and mostly sunny; winter is bitterly cold, dry and long. Travelers should adjust their luggage and outfits according to the season of their visit.
It is advisable to book accommodation in advance. Looking for a place to stay last minute at night will put you in a difficult position, and always keep personal safety in mind. Purchase a local map to get a general overview of Liaoyuan’s road network and scenic spots — this is highly recommended. Bring rain gear in summer and autumn for unexpected showers. Prepare suitable clothing and sun protection products, as well as common medicines such as cold remedies, adhesive bandages and anti-diarrheal pills. Remember to carry valid ID cards and relevant documents when you go out.
Now let’s talk about Liaoyuan’s signature foods and local specialties. The most famous street snacks here are Dongshan Roasted Potatoes and Spicy Noodles. Longquanchun Liquor, brewed from red sorghum, is a renowned local alcohol. A variety of wild mushrooms grow in the area, including hazel mushrooms, pine boletes, slippery jacks, willow mushrooms, poplar mushrooms, field mushrooms, white mushrooms and grey puffballs.
Deer antler discs refer to the ossified leftover antlers that naturally shed in spring the year after pilose antlers are cut off. They are believed to have medicinal effects of strengthening tendons and bones, tonifying the kidney, promoting lactation, activating blood circulation and relieving swelling. With such a wide array of specialties, it is well worth picking some to take home as gifts for relatives and friends.
