Festivals

Tongjiang Hezhe Ethnic Tourism and Culture Festival

The Kyrgyz people mainly live in round yurts woven of red willow and felt, as well as flat-roofed earthen houses. Their staple foods include meat, dairy products, rice and wheat flour. Camel leather handicrafts such as bowls, kettles and buckets, together with elegant wall hangings, feature unique shapes and exquisite craftsmanship, making them highly collectible artworks.
Kyrgyz folk music is melodious, resonant and grand. During festivals and gatherings, the Kyrgyz people sing and recite their heroic epic Manas. Alongside the Tibetan epic King Gesar and Mongolian epic Jangar, Manas ranks among China’s Three Great Heroic Epics. It depicts the heroic struggles and stirring deeds of the Kyrgyz nation in the pursuit of national unification and independence, embodying the nomadic people’s profound wisdom and unwavering resolve to seek freedom.
Every August, the Tongjiang Hezhe Ethnic Tourism and Culture Festival is held in Tongjiang City. The traditional Hezhe welcoming ritual Wenjini opens the festival, followed by grand ethnic performances. Attractions include traditional Hezhe sports: spear-and-ball game, deer hair ball, wrestling, pole pushing and boat racing, alongside Hezhe wedding ceremonies, river lantern releases and contests for preparing traditional ethnic cuisine.

Wurigong Festival

Jiamusi Tourism Festival — Wurigong Festival
Jiejinkou is one of the most densely populated Hezhe settlements. The Hezhe people hold the Wurigong Grand Gathering here every three years on June 28. The word "Wurigong" means "joy and celebration" in the Hezhe language. What began as small informal gatherings gradually grew into a pan-ethnic grand festival in 1985, drawing participants from all Hezhe communities.
Hosted in Hezhe fishing villages, the grand gathering fully showcases the Hezhe people’s cultural life and spiritual vitality. Core activities cover folk arts (folk songs, dances, traditional musical instruments), ethnic sports, and cooking contests featuring wild mountain and river ingredients. Held amid lush scenery and a thriving fishing season, most events take the form of open-air bonfire galas.

Wedding Customs

Hezhe Wedding Customs (Jiamusi Tourism Festival Theme)

For a Hezhe engagement, the groom’s family brings wine to the bride’s home. The two families drink wine together before negotiating betrothal gifts, cash, silk fabrics and other dowries. Once the bride and her parents give consent, the groom stays at the bride’s residence. A later date is set for the bride to move to her husband’s family home, and the groom does not travel to escort the bride.

Kyrgyz Wedding Customs

Kyrgyz weddings are grand celebrations that usually last three days, mostly scheduled at month’s end. Festivities feature horse racing, sheep snatching wrestling and other recreational events, extending the joy of the wedding for all attendees. Sheep snatching is a thrilling equestrian competition where skilled riders race to seize a young lamb, immensely popular among nomadic herders
