About Meiligeng
Meiligeng means "wisdom and intelligence" in Mongolian. Located in Jiuyuan District of Baotou, the scenic area sits on the southern slope of Dahua Back, the main peak of the Wula Mountains, 25 kilometers away from downtown Baotou. National Highway 110 and the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway run along its southern border.
From June to September each year, wild flowers bloom in profusion, shrouded in mist and drizzling rain, creating an otherworldly fairyland. The area is equally enchanting with fiery red leaves in autumn and vast snowfields in winter. The main peak Dahua Back stands at an altitude of 2,322 meters. The scenic zone features jagged peaks crisscrossed by valleys, luxuriant woods and colorful blossoms. Its landscapes, characterized by grandeur, grace, seclusion and openness, draw hordes of tourists from local areas and other provinces nationwide.
To climb Dahua Back, visitors may enter the mountains via West Wubulang Pass, then follow winding mountain trails southward. The first perilous spot along the route is Great Eagle Cove. Towering bluestone cliffs rise dozens of zhang high. Several ancient pine trees grow from crevices on the rock faces; their roots stretch sideways while their sturdy trunks soar straight toward the sky. Their dense canopies twist with gnarled branches covered in fresh, vivid green foliage. True to its name, Great Eagle Cove is home to large eagles. Visitors often spot the giant birds perched atop ancient pines, wings folded and necks drawn in, motionless like grey-black stone. When disturbed by tourists, they suddenly take flight, spreading wings wide enough to nearly obscure the sky. Their fierce, vigorous forms and sharp cries carry them straight up into the clouds in an instant. Beyond the Loess Cliff, cross the watershed and head straight for Heitu Dam.
