The Wave Valley features red sandstone landforms. It gets its name The Wave for the wave-like patterns covering the rock surfaces. In the 1980s, a famous wave valley was discovered on the border of Arizona and Utah in the United States. Its fantastic landscape and high scientific research value earned it a place among the world’s eight greatest rock wonders.
The Wave Valley in Jingbian boasts red sandstone canyons comparable to its American counterpart. Both sites are formed of red sandstone, yet the Jingbian formation is geologically younger, with a history of merely 60 million years. Much of its sand has not fully consolidated into solid rock. Officially named Longzhou Canyon of Jingbian, Shaanxi, it is located in Longzhou Township, Jingbian County, where the Loess Plateau meets the Mu Us Desert.
Unlike its American namesake, which requires hard-to-obtain permits, the Chinese Wave Valley in Jingbian has not yet become a well-known scenic spot. Visitors can walk freely among the rock formations and touch these ancient patterns carved by time.
Regrettably, the landscape has been damaged due to continuous sand digging by local villagers who sell the red sandstone for profit. It remains uncertain whether this natural wonder will still exist a decade from now.
The valley lies in the wilderness, 1.5 kilometres southeast of Longzhou Township in Jingbian County. Clear road signs have guided numerous photographers and hikers here over the years. However, the final 1.5 kilometres consist of rough country dirt roads: muddy and impassable on rainy days, and dusty on sunny days. Drivers of ordinary vehicles are advised to exercise caution; off-road vehicles are recommended. Alternatively, you may park your car in Longzhou Township and walk the rest of the way.
Though marked as the Longzhou Danxia Landform Photography Base, the site remains largely undeveloped with almost no tourist facilities. Despite the basic conditions, it retains its original natural charm. Local villagers are warm and hospitable, and enjoy chatting casually with visitors.
