Located 75 kilometers away from Lanzhou and 1 kilometer southwest of Yongjing County seat in Linxia, this hydropower station nestles in a canyon of the Yellow River. It is a large-scale water conservancy project independently designed, constructed and manufactured by China during the First Five-Year Plan. Completed in 1974, it serves as a key hub for harnessing the Yellow River, developing its water resources, and integrating power generation, flood control, irrigation, aquaculture and navigation. It is also a popular tourist resort.
The Liujiaxia Reservoir has a total storage capacity of 5.7 billion cubic meters and a water area of over 130 square kilometers, stretching 54 kilometers from southwest to northeast. The river-blocking dam stands 147 meters high and 840 meters long. The power house lies at the dam base, housing five large generating units in its underground hall, with a total installed capacity of 1.225 million kilowatts and an annual power output of 5.7 billion kilowatt-hours. The hydropower station links up the power grids of Shaanxi, Gansu and Qinghai provinces.
Nestled among plateau canyons, the reservoir is hailed as the Pearl of the Plateau with breathtaking scenery. Tourists can take a yacht upstream along the Yellow River. Inside the canyon, strange peaks stand facing each other with steep rock walls rising sheer. Beyond the canyon lies a vast alpine lake, where clear water blends with the yellow loess and merges with the sky. About 50 kilometers further west stands the Bingling Temple Grottoes. At the mountain entrance rise the Sister Peaks, graceful and elegant, as if greeting visitors with a smile.
