Shanshan County belongs to Turpan City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, sitting on the eastern piedmont of the Tianshan Mountains and the east side of the Turpan Basin. It lies 280 km east of Urumqi and 340 km west of Hami. 1. By Air (The Nearest Airports)
(1) Turpan Jiaohe Airport (TPR, the closest airport)
Distance to Shanshan downtown: about 80 km, 40-minute drive via G30 Lianhuo Expressway今日头条.
Air routes: Direct flights connect Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changsha, Xi’an and Urumqi.
Ground transfer: Taxi, private car charter or intercity coach are available outside the terminal building.
(2) Urumqi Diwopu International Airport (URC, main international gateway)
For overseas tourists or visitors without direct flights to Turpan:
Fly to Urumqi first;
Take high-speed rail from Urumqi to Shanshan North Railway Station (1.5 hours);
Or take long-distance bus / private car (3–3.5 hours driving time) to Shanshan County.
2. By Train (Most Recommended for Tourists)

High-speed Rail (CRH / D-series bullet trains)
Urumqi ↔ Shanshan North: Around 90 minutes, fare approx CNY 80; frequent daily schedules throughout the dayTrip.com.
Turpan ↔ Shanshan North: Only 30 minutes, very suitable for a combined tour of Turpan Flame Mountain and Kumtag DesertTrip.com.
After arriving at Shanshan North Station:
Taxi: 15 minutes to Kumtag Desert Scenic Spot (CNY 20–30);
Public bus No.7 runs directly to the desert entrance with low cost.
Ordinary Railway
Conventional trains stop at Shanshan Railway Station, suitable for budget travellers taking long-distance sleeper trains across China. The station is relatively far from the urban area, so taxi transfer is required upon arrival.
3. By Highway & Self-driving
Core Highways & National Roads
G30 Lianhuo Expressway: Runs through the whole territory of Shanshan, the main road for self-driving tourists from Urumqi, Hami and Dunhuang.
Urumqi → Shanshan: 3 hours’ drive; free large parking lots are equipped at Kumtag Desert Scenic Area携程.
Dunhuang → Shanshan: about 4–4.5 hours along G30.

Long-distance Intercity Bus
Urumqi South Bus Station has regular coaches to Shanshan, operating from morning till early evening, travel time: 3–4 hours.
Intercity buses from Turpan downtown to Shanshan take roughly 2 hours.
4. Local Transportation Inside Shanshan County
Taxi & Ride-hailing: Cheap and convenient; taxi fare from downtown to Kumtag Desert gate is only CNY 10, or a 20-minute walk is acceptable携程.
Public Buses: Bus No.1 and No.7 connect the county bus terminal, downtown blocks and Kumtag Desert scenic entrance.
Chartered car / shared car: Ideal for visiting remote sites such as Tuyugou Valley and ancient Loulan ruins around Shanshan.
Scenic shuttle bus: Mandatory shuttle bus inside Kumtag Desert for reaching core dune viewing areas (one-way & round-trip tickets available).
Practical Travel Tips
High-speed rail is the most balanced option in terms of time, comfort and price for independent travellers.
Self-driving is preferred for photography enthusiasts and group travellers, with abundant gas stations along G30.
Summer (June–August) has extremely high ground temperature in the Gobi and desert; prepare sufficient water and sun protection when travelling by road.
All major scenic spots are concentrated in the southern urban fringe, so accommodation near the desert gate can greatly cut commuting time.
