Recommended Chizhou Tour Routes – Chizhou Travel Itineraries
Route 1: Jiuhua Mountain
Suggested Sightseeing Sequence: Longquan Scenic Spot → Sweet Dew Ancient Temple → Huacheng Temple → Roubao Temple → Ksitigarbha Chan Temple → Natural Sleeping Buddha → True Body of Monk Wuxia → Hall of Five Hundred Arhats
Take a coach to Jiuhua Mountain Scenic Area in the morning. Visit Longquan Scenic Spot, the earliest practice site of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, and learn about the culture of passing away. Board the scenic shuttle bus uphill; catch distant views of Sweet Dew Ancient Temple and Jiuhua Mountain Buddhist Institute along the way. Tour Huacheng Temple, walk through Jiuhua Old Street, and pay homage at Roubao Temple which enshrines Ksitigarbha’s flesh relic. Stop by Ksitigarbha Chan Temple to worship the intact body of Master Ciming.
After lunch, take the ground cable car to Hundred-Year Temple or hike up to East Cliff Skylight Ridge. Admire the Natural Sleeping Buddha, pay respects to the preserved flesh body of the Ming-dynasty eminent monk Wuxia, and visit the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats. Hike or take the cable car downhill to wrap up the tour.
Route 2: Guniujiang Scenic Area (Tent Camping Included)
Led by a local guide, start the ascent to the main peak from Tanjiayuan. Set up camp on the alpine meadow in the afternoon, then travel light to the summit to watch the sunset glow. Spend the night at the campsite on the highland grassland.
Get up early the next morning to climb the main peak and view the sunrise, followed by breakfast. Cross the stone platform and descend towards Qimen under the guide’s lead. Stop at Qibaili for lunch and rest. A waterfall and large deep pool above the campsite are available for swimming.
Depart the campsite at around 1 p.m. and continue downhill. The trail is lined with abundant waterways, perfect for water fun and photography. The journey ends after descending the mountain.
Route 3: Penglai Immortal Cave & Guaitan Drifting
Morning: Penglai Immortal Cave
The scenic spot lies 9 km off Provincial Highway 221 and 50 km from Yinkui Exit of the Yangtze River Expressway. It is only a 15-minute drive from Shitai County. No direct shuttle or public buses are available; visitors can rent a taxi at an affordable price or drive a private car.
The full cave tour takes roughly 2 hours. The cave is structured into four layers: Upper Cave, Middle Cave, Lower Cave and Underground River. The Gauze Curtain in the Queen Mother’s Jade Pool is hailed as the cave’s treasure. Visitors short on time may head straight to this landmark.
Food lovers must not miss local specialties at the scenic area: braised eggs with Chinese toon buds, Shaji fermented stinky tofu and Lingyang multi-ingredient hot pot.
Afternoon: Guaitan Drifting
The drifting site sits near the intersection of Provincial Highway S225 and S221; self-driving or chartered cars are recommended.
Inflatable rafts for 2, 3, 4 or 6 passengers are provided. Non-swimmers may team up with other tourists to ease their fears.
Do not bring cameras, mobile phones or other electronics onto the rafts, or prepare waterproof bags in advance.
Route 4: Xinghua Village
Transportation
- Public transport: Take Bus No.2, 6, 8 or 15 within the city to reach the village.
- Self-driving route: Chizhou Railway Station → Yongming Road → South Changjiang Road → National Highway G318 → Scenic Area.
Highlights
Wax figures in Du Huai Studio, a maze, Huanggong Tavern, and live opera performances. There are leisure spots where visitors can rest and taste authentic Xinghua Village wine. You may wander to find these venues; if unfamiliar with the layout, it is advisable to follow a tourist group.
