What festival events are held in Putian?

Putian Loquat Cultural Tourism Festival

Every May, Chengxiang District of Putian City hosts the Loquat Cultural Tourism Festival in Changtai Town, hailed as "China’s Top Township for Loquats", drawing a great number of tourists from home and abroad.
Apart from 80,000 mu of loquat orchards, Changtai Town in Chengxiang District boasts abundant tourist attractions, including Jiulong Valley National Forest Park and Yangbian Village, a national demonstration site for agricultural tourism.
May marks the peak loquat-picking season. Leveraging its rich loquat and tourism resources, Chengxiang District holds the festival in Changtai Town. High-quality loquats are displayed, and visitors are taught practical skills such as picking and peeling the fruit. Tourists can also pick loquats in the orchards on site. The event diversifies tourism experiences and boosts visitor enthusiasm. Meanwhile, it helps local fruit farmers overcome difficulties in selling their produce.

Puxian Opera

Puxian Opera is one of Fujian’s ancient opera genres. Originally known as Xinghua Opera, it prevailed in Putian and Xianyou, collectively called Xinghua in ancient times, as well as other Xinghua dialect areas in central and southern Fujian.
Opera troupes have staged performances in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Jinjiang, Longxi, Sanming and overseas overseas Chinese communities. Research confirms that it evolved from the ancient Hundred Operas.

Shifan and Bayue Folk Music

Antiquated folk music enjoys widespread popularity across towns and villages in the Puxian region. Cai Xiang, a distinguished scholar of the Northern Song Dynasty, wrote in praise: "Fine music floats alone in the courtyard; cool breezes chase away the summer heat."
The most celebrated folk musical forms here are Shifan, Bayue and Dagu Chui (grand wind and drum music).
At present, the city has more than 1,260 Shifan and Bayue music societies and over 40 Dagu Chui bands.
During traditional festivals, these folk music groups put on performances to entertain locals and guests alike. The melodious sound of string and wind instruments mixed with vibrant drumbeats creates an enchanting festive atmosphere.

Folk Dances

The Nine-Rank Lotus Lantern Dance has long been popular in Putian and Xianyou, with many seasoned folk performers still practicing it today.
The Nine-Carp Dance originated in Huangshi Town of Putian. It began as a folk ritual for praying for blessings and warding off evil spirits, and gradually developed into an auspicious festive celebration dance.
Walking in the Rain, also known as the Umbrella Dance, was adapted from a scene in Puxian Opera Baiyue Pavilion: Ruilan Braving the Rain on the Journey, depicting a mother and daughter traveling through rain.
Thanks to its graceful, distinctive dance movements, it has been passed down as an artistic highlight of Puxian Opera and often performed as an independent opera excerpt by veteran artists. Later, this piece spread from opera stages to ordinary folk communities
