Perched on Ancestral Temple Hill, the highest peak in northern Meizhou Island, the shrine was first consecrated in the 4th year of the Yongxi reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (987 AD). It stands as the sacred holy land for Mazu believers all over the world.

After numerous reconstructions and expansions, the temple has grown into a magnificent architectural complex. In particular, the temple buildings along the south central axis stretch 323 meters long and 99 meters wide. The Main Hall of the Heavenly Queen is 19 meters high, 50 meters wide and 30 meters deep, covering an area of 987 square meters. It can hold one thousand worshippers at the same time. An 8-meter seated statue of Mazu is enshrined in the center, flanked by eight attendant deities.

In front of the hall lies the Heavenly Queen Square covering more than 10,000 square meters, together with a grand opera stage standing 26.5 meters high for major ceremonial events. The viewing stands and covered corridors on both sides can accommodate ten thousand visitors. The main memorial archway at the mountain gate is 19 meters high, 33 meters wide with five bays, ranking among the most spectacular archways in China.

Located at the southernmost tip of Meizhou Island, Goose Tail Mountain is surrounded by the sea on three sides, forming a perfect scenic counterpart to the Mazu Ancestral Temple in the north. Boasting rich and unique natural scenery including grotesque peaks, fantastic rock formations, blue waters, sandy beaches and lush forests, it is a rare comprehensive scenic zone on the island. The area is divided into three sections: Goose Tail Divine Stone Park, Four-Season Garden and Seaside Plaza.

Meiyu Tide Sound is one of the Twenty-Four Scenic Sights of Putian. It sits on the northernmost headland of Meizhou Island. Thanks to its unique wind-eroded and sea-eroded landforms, the surging tides produce melodious sounds like string ensembles or the booming of bells and drums, hence the name. Since ancient times, countless literati have composed poems praising this wonderful natural music of the waves.

Known as the No.1 Beach under Heaven, Jiubaolan Golden Beach juts out on the southwestern coast of Meizhou Island. Shaped like a crescent moon, it hangs over the sapphire-blue sea. The beach extends more than 2,000 meters in length and 100 meters in width. Facing the boundless ocean and backed by thousands of mu of lush casuarina forests, it is dotted with jagged peaks and weird rocks. The marvelous work of nature never fails to amaze tourists
