Jiuli Lake Scenic Area sits in Zhongshan Town, Xianyou County. It is 31 kilometers away from the county seat at an altitude of 590 meters. It is one of the Four Great Sights of Xianyou, including Jiuli Lake, Maixie Rock, Caixi Rock and Tianma Mountain. The scenic spot is famous for four wonders: lake, caves, waterfalls and grotesque rocks, among which the cascading waterfalls are the highlight. It enjoys the reputation that "the waterfalls of Jiuli Lake are unparalleled under heaven". Together with Wuyi Mountain and Yuhua Cave, it is known as one of the Three Marvels of Fujian.

According to legend, during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, nine brothers of the He clan refined immortality elixirs here to help ordinary people. After completing their alchemy, they rode nine carps and ascended to immortality, hence the name Jiuli Lake (Nine-Carp Lake).

For thousands of years, the legend of the Nine Immortals of the He family has attracted numerous nobles, officials and literati to travel here and pray for dreams. They left behind a great many precious poems, essays and cliff inscriptions
