What Scenic Spots Are There in Tengchong?

Tengchong lies on the western border of Yunnan Province, enjoying a spring-like climate all year round. It borders Myanmar to the west and was a vital hub on the ancient Southwestern Silk Road in history. Sparkling green jadeite makes this remote frontier town extraordinarily brilliant; volcanoes and hot springs bring it worldwide fame; ancient towns and overseas Chinese settlements embody its unique charm. Six indigenous ethnic groups including the Dai, Hui, Lisu, Wa, Bai and Achang live here, creating rich and colourful ethnic customs.

National Martyrs Cemetery

This is an unmissable attraction in Tengchong, where more than 3,000 soldiers of the Chinese Expeditionary Force and over a dozen Allied military officers are buried. On the mausoleum hill beside the Martyrs Shrine stand tombstones of officers and soldiers who lost their lives in the Yunnan-Burma Campaign, engraved with their ranks and names. Visitors may buy a bouquet of flowers from the flower shop outside the cemetery to pay sincere tribute to these heroes.

Dieshui River Scenic Area

The Dieshui Waterfall plunges more than 40 metres. Huge boulders shaped like turtles squat atop the cliff edge. Dozens of steps away from the waterfall stands Taiji Stone Bridge spanning the river. Under the bridge, torrential currents crash against green cliffs, unfurling like white silk ribbons, just as the Milky Way pouring down from the sky. Spray billows like floating cotton wool. The roar echoes hundreds of paces away. When sunlight shines through the rising mist, colourful rainbows frequently appear. Water splatters like fine drizzle all year long.

Former Residence of Li Yuangen

The former residence is a courtyard complex built with wood and earth. It boasts profound cultural connotations and a magnificent layout, with lush grass and a tranquil environment inside. On display are photos, publications, partial manuscripts, letters and personal belongings of Mr. Li Yuangen from different historical periods. The stele corridor is inlaid with dozens of stone carvings inscribed with calligraphy by Li Yuangen, his teachers, friends and celebrities from home and abroad throughout history. The works cover regular script, running script, seal script and clerical script, flowing elegantly like soaring dragons and swallows and forming a spectacular sight.

Confucian Temple

The Confucian Temple is both an ancient architectural complex and an old battlefield. From the remaining two halls and the semi-circular pond, visitors can still catch a glimpse of its past grandeur. During the battle to recapture Tengchong, Japanese troops turned the temple into a fortress and put up stubborn resistance. Bullet holes on the corridor pillars and stone foundations remain clearly visible to this day.

Former Site of the British Consulate

This British-style building was constructed with volcanic stones. Though dilapidated, it still looks solid. Japanese troops occupied it as a stronghold during the campaign to retake Tengchong, and bullet scars can still be seen all over the outer walls.

Wenxing Street

The architectural style of Wenxing Street draws inspiration from the folk dwellings of overseas Chinese in Heshun and the ancient buildings of old Tengchong City. It combines various traditional buildings with distinct Tengchong characteristics. The facades are decorated with classic local details: ingot-shaped beam heads, brick tilework, blue bricks and green tiles, secondary eaves, wooden lattice windows and wooden horizontal plaques, creating a grand and imposing streetscape. Strolling along Wenxing Street, you can experience Tengchong’s history and culture, shop for jadeite jewellery and taste authentic local snacks.
