1. Tengchong in Yunnan is home to many ethnic minorities. Please respect local folk customs.
2. If you lack the expertise to judge jadeite quality, avoid buying jadeite from street stalls, as counterfeit or inferior products are common. Purchase only from licensed formal stores in Tengchong.
3. It is best to shop for jade with a local Tengchong resident you know. Shop owners will not overcharge you; otherwise, they usually quote a price nearly double the fair market value.
4. Tengchong features abundant volcanoes and geothermal resources. Travellers allergic to sulphur and other minerals should avoid hot spring bathing.
5. Hot springs are the highlight of Tengchong’s trip. Remember to bring your swimwear and bathing supplies.
6. Tengchong and the Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve are key ecological protection zones in Yunnan. Please keep the environment clean.
7. If travelling by coach, note that Gaoligong Mountain sits at high altitude with numerous sharp bends, which may trigger altitude sickness.
8. Tengchong receives frequent rainfall. The Gaoligong Mountains block warm and humid currents from the Indian Ocean and create orographic rain. Always bring rain gear.
