How to Get to Fuxian Lake in Yuxi, Yunnan

Fuxian Lake is one of China's large deep freshwater lakes and a major lake at the source of the Pearl River, belonging to the Nanpan River water system. It lies across Chengjiang, Jiangchuan and Huaning counties in Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, more than 60 kilometers away from Kunming.

Formed by fault and karst erosion, the lake stretches from north to south and resembles an upside-down gourd — wide at both ends and narrow in the middle. Its northern part is broad and deep, while the southern part is narrow and shallow, with a constricted section in the center.

The lake sits at an altitude of 1,722.5 meters above sea level, covering an area of 216.6 square kilometers. It has a total water volume of 20.62 billion cubic meters, with an average depth of 95.2 meters and a maximum depth of 158.9 meters. Its water storage capacity equals 12 times that of Dianchi Lake, 6 times that of Erhai Lake and 4.5 times that of Taihu Lake. It accounts for 72.8% of the total water reserve of Yunnan's nine major plateau lakes and 9.16% of the reserve of all freshwater lakes across China.
