Huangyao Ancient Town (ticket required) is a renowned historic town in Guangxi and has been listed among China’s Top 50 Places Worth Visiting for Foreigners. Founded in the Kaibao reign of the Song Dynasty, the town covers an area of 3.6 square kilometers and features typical karst landforms.
Within the ancient town, there are numerous mountains, rivers, caves, pavilions, towers, temples, ancestral halls, ancient trees, couplets and horizontal inscribed boards. A unique landscape takes shape following a distinctive pattern: where there are mountains, there are waters; where there are waters, there are bridges; where there are bridges, there are pavilions; where there are pavilions, there are couplets; and where there are couplets, there are inscribed boards.

Driving Routes to Huangyao Ancient Town from Various Regions
1. From Guilin (2 hours’ drive)
Guilin → Guiyang-Wuzhou Expressway (towards Wuzhou) → Huangyao Exit (2 kilometers) → Huangyao Scenic Area
Coach Buses between Guilin and Huangyao
- Guilin to Huangyao: Departures at 08:00 and 13:30 from Guilin Central Bus Station
- Huangyao to Guilin: Departures at 08:00 and 14:00 from Gongqiao Town, passing Huangyao Qianxing Square
From Laibin to Huangyao
Laibin (Expressway) → Liuzhou (Expressway) → Luzhai (National Highway G323) → Lipu (National Highway) → Pingle (Pingle-Zhongshan Expressway) → Tonggu (Pingle-Zhongshan Expressway, towards Wuzhou) → Huangyao Exit (2 kilometers) → Huangyao Scenic Area
2. From Wuzhou (1 hour’s drive)
Wuzhou → Guiyang-Wuzhou Expressway (towards Guilin) → Huangyao Exit (2 kilometers) → Huangyao Scenic Area
3. From Nanning and Beihai
Route A
Beihai (around 210 km on North-South Expressway) → Nanning (344 km on Nanning-Wuzhou Expressway) → Wuzhou (100 km on Guiyang-Wuzhou Expressway to Huangyao) → Huangyao
Total distance: about 700 km, travel time: around 7 hours (entirely expressway)
Route B
Beihai → Hepu → Bobai → Yulin → Cenxi → Wuzhou → Huangyao
Total distance: about 500 km
Friendly reminder: The expressway linking Yulin, Xingye and Wuzhou is now fully open.
Coach Bus: Nanning — Zhaoping
- Departs from Langdong Bus Station in Nanning at 08:00
- Returns from Zhaoping at 17:00, arriving at Langdong Bus Station and terminating at the Tourism Distribution Center
- The bus passes Gongqiao and Huangyao at 18:00
4. From Changsha & Hengyang, Hunan Province
Changsha (53 km via National Highway 107 / 51 km via Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway) → Xiangtan (124 km via National Highway 107) → Hengyang (Expressway) → Chenzhou → Lianzhou → Liannan → Lianshan → Hezhou (Expressway) → Huangyao

5. From Yongzhou, Hunan Province

Start from Lengshuitan District, Yongzhou (Toll: ¥10 at Lengshuitan Toll Station for city entry) → Drive 8 km (about 10 mins) to the interchange in Lingling District, turn onto the expressway for Ningyuan → Drive 10 km (15 mins) (Toll: ¥10 at Chalin Toll Station, Lingling District) → Drive 100 km (2 hours) to Ningyuan Toll Station (Toll: ¥10) → Ningyuan County → Drive 42 km (1 hour) to Dao County Toll Station (Toll: ¥10) → Drive around 40 km (50 mins) to Jianghua Toll Station (Toll: ¥5) → Jianghua County → Drive 39 km (35 mins) to Baimangying Toll Station (Toll: ¥10) → Drive 35 km (30 mins) to Baisha, Fuchuan → Drive 14 km (20 mins) to Fuchuan Toll Station (Toll: ¥10) → Drive 25 km (30 mins) to Babu Toll Station (Toll: ¥10) → Downtown Hezhou → Drive 60 km via expressway → Huangyao Scenic Area
6. From Hechi
Hechi (74 km via national highway) → Yizhou (around 70 km via expressway) → Luzhai (exit expressway, take National Highway G323, 55 km on secondary road) → Toupai Town (42 km via National Highway 232) → Lipu County (34 km via National Highway G323) → Pingle County (merge onto Guiyang-Wuzhou Expressway, around 120 km, head towards Wuzhou) → Huangyao (exit the expressway and drive 2 km straight to the scenic area)
Self-driving Routes from Guangzhou to Huangyao Ancient Town
Route A
Shenzhen → Guangzhou → Sanshui → Sihui → Guangning → Huaiji → Hezhou → Huangyao
Exit the expressway at Huangyao and drive 2 km to reach the scenic area. The whole route is expressway with good road conditions. The expressway between Huaiji and Hezhou is open. This route is widely recommended by tour drivers and used by long-distance direct coaches from Shenzhen and Guangzhou to Hezhou.
Route B
Shenzhen → Guangzhou → Zhaoqing → Wuzhou → Huangyao
Updates:
- The full expressway from Guangzhou to Wuzhou opened on July 1, 2010. The journey takes only 2.5 hours.
- The entire expressway between Wuzhou and Hezhou opened in early 2010. This is an optional route for travelers departing from Guangzhou to Hezhou.

- From Hunan: Changsha (Luoyang-Zhanjiang Railway) → Hezhou Railway Station → Transfer to bus at West Hezhou Bus Station → Huangyao Scenic Area
