What Delicious Food Can You Find in Meizhou & Where to Eat Them?

Located in the northeastern part of Guangdong Province, Meizhou is the primary gathering and settlement hub for the Hakka people. A great variety of authentic Hakka delicacies await visitors here. What tasty dishes should you try in Meizhou?

Braised Pork Knuckles in Brown Sauce

A classic traditional Han Chinese dish under Cantonese cuisine.
Features: The pork knuckle meat is ultra-tender and fall-off-the-bone, with a savoury, palatable flavour.

Scallion Oil Chicken

A signature local specialty from Pingyuan County, Meizhou, belonging to Cantonese cuisine.
Features: Simple ingredients and easy preparation. The chicken meat is silky and tender, carrying a fresh, mellow taste with rich scallion aroma wafting through every bite.

Farm-Style Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Mustard Greens

This dish is well-known for its fatty pork belly. First-time diners often hesitate to take a bite for fear of greasiness. Yet once you boldly chew a chunk as juices fill your mouth, you will find it far less cloying than ordinary red-braised pork. The preserved mustard greens soak up excess grease, while the pork belly infuses the greens with a delicate fragrant flavour — the pairing achieves perfect harmony of tastes.

Mixed Assorted Tofu Casserole

A visually appealing, aromatic and flavourful traditional Han Chinese Cantonese dish.
Tofu boasts abundant nutrition, loaded with essential trace elements including iron, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, as well as carbohydrates, vegetable oil and high-quality protein, earning it the nickname "plant-based meat".

Sweet and Sour Vinegar Fish

A renowned specialty of Meijiang District, Meizhou. It is a time-honoured Cantonese staple and an ideal accompaniment to wine.

Phoenix Reincarnation (Chicken Stuffed in Pork Tripe)

Also known as chicken wrapped in pork tripe, it is a classic traditional Han dish from Guangdong under Cantonese cuisine.

Braised Pork in Brown Gravy

On par with iconic Hakka dishes such as braised pork with preserved mustard greens, taro braised pork and Gannan stuffed meat parcel, this dish is glossy, soft, glutinous and extraordinarily tasty. Its vibrant red hue symbolises prosperity, making it an indispensable dish for wedding feasts. In olden times, it was placed at the bottom of serving bowls to avoid empty plates, which would embarrass hosts. The rice koji used to stew the pork helps lower blood lipid levels.

Chicken Simmered in Ginger Rice Wine

Also called ginger wine chicken, it is an essential nourishing tonic for new mothers during the postpartum confinement month. From their first meal after childbirth until the baby’s one-month milestone, women eat this dish as their staple food. Castrated rooster is stir-fried with ginger and then simmered in glutinous rice wine. Nutrient-dense, it dispels internal cold and activates blood circulation.
