Delicious Food in Qingyuan – Top Local Cuisine Recommendations

Chicken

As the most iconic local delicacy of Qingyuan, Qingyuan Chicken is an indispensable dish for daily family meals as well as wedding banquets and festivals.
The Chinese character for "chicken" sounds identical to the character for "auspiciousness". Therefore, chicken symbolizes good fortune and peace for all. Besides the popular white-cut chicken, local residents also make soy sauce braised chicken by hand to cater to diverse taste preferences.

Tofu

Tofu is a time-honored traditional folk food in Qingyuan with high nutritional value, hailed as "plant-based meat". The character "fu" in tofu shares the same pronunciation as the word for "blessing", so tofu carries the auspicious meaning of abundant blessings.
Tofu is as white as pure jade with an ultra-tender texture, boasting a fragrant, silky taste favored by all. Jiulong Tofu from Yingde is famous for its fresh, tender and smooth texture. Made from premium local soybeans and natural mountain spring water in Jiulong Town, it delivers a clean, delicate flavor the moment it hits your tongue.
The renowned Wangwu Shuiguzhong Tofu from Jintan Town is crafted from green soybeans, tasting far sweeter than regular soybean tofu.

Dried Bean Curd Sticks (Yuba)

Yuba symbolizes affluence, embodying Qingyuan locals’ beautiful wishes for a prosperous life. Boasting a long production history and superior texture, local yuba draws countless food lovers and has become a must-buy souvenir for tourists.
In Yangshan County, Dongshan Yuba from Dubu Town stands out with its rich bean aroma and firm texture that never falls apart after prolonged boiling, earning widespread fame.
Yuba produced in Shangbinjiang District of Qingxin District is also well-known. It is handmade entirely from pollution-free green soybeans grown locally and pure mountain spring water from the area.

Lettuce

A vegetable available all year round, lettuce is a staple on local dining tables. In Chinese culture, lettuce symbolizes wealth accumulation; eating lettuce expresses wishes for a thriving family and lasting prosperity.
How could any lively festive celebration, especially the Lunar New Year, be complete without lettuce?

New Year Rice Cake (Nian Gao)

Nian gao is a classic traditional Chinese seasonal treat essential to Lunar New Year celebrations across many regions.
Steamed from glutinous rice or glutinous rice flour, nian gao comes in red, yellow and white hues that represent gold and silver treasures. Pronounced the same as the phrase "rising year after year", nian gao carries the auspicious implication that people’s careers and lives will improve steadily with each passing year.

Turnip Cake

Turnip cake is another must-have New Year pastry for most Qingyuan locals, signifying promotion and progress — sharing a similar lucky omen with nian gao.
Back in my grandmother’s generation, families would grind batter from scratch to make turnip cakes. Once pan-fried, groups of children would crowd around the table, grabbing pieces to share. It is full of warm childhood nostalgia
