Tourist Attractions in Zhaoqing – Where Are the Fun Spots?
Dinghu Mountain
Zhaoqing’s most famous scenic spot, Dinghu Mountain ranks first among the Four Great Mountains of Lingnan. Together with Danxia Mountain, Luofu Mountain (ticket required) and Xiqiao Mountain, it makes up the Four Renowned Mountains of Guangdong Province.
Qixingyan (Seven Star Crags) (Ticket required)
Comparable to Dinghu Mountain, it is hailed as "An Earthly Fairyland" and "The No.1 Wonder of Lingnan". It consists of five lakes, six hills, seven rock peaks and eight karst caves.
Panlong Gorge (Ticket required)
It boasts over 100 waterfalls of all sizes, acclaimed as an unparalleled waterfall cluster in Asia and the top waterfall group in Guangdong. The Panlong Gorge Drift, known as "China’s Premier Brave Drift", pioneered winter drifting nationwide, making it the only scenic area in China that offers drifting all year round.
Yuejiang Tower
First built during the Xuande reign of the Ming Dynasty, it is a classic ancient southern Chinese garden courtyard architecture. As one of the Eight Sights of Zhaoqing named "Watching the Sunset from the River Tower", it now houses Zhaoqing Museum (ticket required), an ideal place to learn about Zhaoqing’s history and culture.
Qingyun Temple
One of the Four Great Buddhist Temples of Lingnan.
Kowloon Lake (Ticket required)
Formed by the convergence of nine mountain streams that look like nine giant dragons soaring into the sky, hence the name Kowloon Lake (Nine-Dragon Lake). It presents distinct charms in four seasons: vibrant green scenery in spring, icy cool mountain springs in summer, magnificent mountain landscapes in autumn and magical misty waterfalls in winter.
Bamboo Sea Grand View
China’s largest bamboo forest, famous for the reputation "The Bamboo Sea of Guangning Outshines All Greenery Under Heaven". Endless green bamboo stretches far like an ocean, forming a spectacular natural bamboo landscape. Visitors can admire bamboo all year round with four unique seasonal views: mist-shrouded bamboo groves in spring, lush emerald bamboo in summer, rolling bamboo waves in autumn and vivid green bamboo foliage in winter.
Dragon Mother Ancestral Temple
A large ancient temple of Lingnan region famed for its divinity, exquisite craftsmanship, ingenious layout and miraculous blessings. Its stone carvings, brick carvings, wood carvings and pottery sculptures showcase peerless architectural carving artistry.
Mei Nunnery
A Buddhist nunnery built in the architectural style of the Northern Song Dynasty in memory of Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism. Its main surviving structures include the Mountain Gate, Mahavira Hall and Patriarch Hall.
Duanzhou Ancient City Wall (Ticket required)
The only fully preserved ancient city wall remaining in Guangdong Province. Standing 10 metres above ground, it features brick outer layers with rammed earth filling in between. There are 28 crenellations along the outer wall, and over 40 specifications of city bricks, bearing witness to multiple renovations throughout history.
Golden Valley
Crystal clear lakes, green mountains, vast bamboo groves and old dwellings help visitors escape the hustle and bustle of the world and step into a legendary earthly paradise (ticket required). Fascinating natural landscapes and ancient cultural relics create a timeless, otherworldly atmosphere.
Xijiang River
The Xijiang River boasts high-quality clear blue water and abundant plump river seafood, allowing tourists to savour fresh aquatic specialties native to the river. Lined with stunning scenery and numerous historical sites, it is accessible by cruise boat. The Xijiang Three Gorges feature sub-attractions including Sailing Boats Returning at Ling Gorge, Sunset Glow Over Peach Stream, Moonlight Over White Sand and Fishing Platform at Banyan Gorge.
Longshan Scenic Area
Its core highlight lies in its incredible geological diversity. It covers scenic spots such as Giant Spotted Rock, Thousand-Layer Peaks, White Stone Cave, Double Dragon Cave, Ten-Mile Gallery of Liandu and Heishiding Nature Reserve. It integrates three major landforms: limestone, granite and sandstone, forming distinctive natural landscapes of giant rocks, peculiar peaks, secluded caves, graceful water and vast forests, earning it the title "Geology Museum of Lingnan".
Feishui Waterfall
Jagged rock formations frame the waterfall, which surges forth from the cliff top over 40 metres high and plunges straight down. At times it forms a thousand-foot torrent like a white silk ribbon hanging in the air; at other times it splashes into countless water droplets dancing like gossamer veils.
Ziyun Valley
Rich forest resources allow visitors to breathe fresh mountain oxygen, play under waterfalls and bathe in natural mountain springs, fully immersing themselves in untouched nature.
Yan Cave
It gets its name from the countless golden swiftlets that build nests and breed inside the cave, making it the only inland habitat for golden swiftlets in China. The scenic area features over 360 uniquely shaped stone peaks rising abruptly from the ground and more than 170 caves of varying sizes, forming a typical karst landscape known as "Little Yangshuo".
Huaiji Yanshan Scenic Area
Peak forests, caves, streams, farmlands, country paths, villages and green bamboo interweave to form picturesque scenery. Yanshan Cave and Pangu Heavenly Cave are located within the mountains. Integrating mountain hiking, water activities, rock climbing, exploration, archaeology and leisure, Yanshan fully embodies the charm of a terrestrial fairyland.
Qixingyan Musical Fountain
Fountain performances are held every night, with water columns dancing rhythmically to music.
Butterfly Valley
The scenic area comprises three parts: a turquoise lake, an islet and dense forest. On the islet lie a colourful butterfly garden, a butterfly wing art gallery, an antique tea lodge, DIY butterfly craft workshops and a wishing tree. Visitors can watch colourful butterflies fluttering and admire a 38-metre-long landscape painting of Zhaoqing’s Thousand-Mile Tourism Corridor pieced together from 100,000 butterfly wings, hailed as "China’s No.1 Butterfly Wing Mural".
Panlong Gorge Drifting
A primitive ecotourism zone covered with lush ancient trees, where Alsophila spinulosa, a national first-class protected plant known as the "living fossil of plants", grows everywhere.
Wenchang Pavilion
A three-storey hexagonal brick-wood pavilion standing 15 metres tall. Each floor is equipped with tiled eaves that shrink layer by layer from bottom to top, capped with a six-sided pointed roof and a yellow glazed gourd-shaped spire.
Paradise Village
It mainly consists of two scenic clusters: Peach Blossom Heavenly Cave and Paradise Village. The cave is filled with countless fantastic stone formations resembling humans and various objects with vivid shapes, earning it the reputations of "Underground Art Gallery" and "Buddhist Sacred Cave". Exiting the east cave opens onto an enclosed mountain basin surrounded by steep, jagged stone mountains with a gentle stream winding through. A small village named Taoyuan Village, also called the Longevity Village by locals, sits nearby.
Thousand-Layer Peaks
Formed by layers of colourful sandstone and partial calcareous shale, it belongs to sandstone peak forest landforms dating back 380 million years to the Devonian Period. It features breathtaking views described in the line "Thousands of stone layers hang like vertical walls, tens of thousands of stone flowers dangle in mid-air".
Jinlin Water Village
An ancient village with profound cultural heritage, antique architecture, abundant natural scenery and rich mythological legends.
Fengkai National Geopark
A vital birthplace of ancient Lingnan civilisation boasting abundant tourism resources with magnificent mountains and outstanding local people. Famous attractions include Longshan karst caves, Giant Spotted Rock, Thousand-Layer Peaks, Ten-Mile Gallery, Hejiang River scenery and Jinzhuang Gold Panning Site.
Pangu Ecological Cultural Scenic Area
Facing the rippling Xinghu Lake and backed by towering Beiling Mountain, the terrain undulates gently with abundant rustic charm and well-layered views. It is seamlessly integrated with the national key scenic area Qixingyan, presenting serene, beautiful lake and mountain vistas.
Xinghu Wetland Park
The wetland park exudes an elegant, primitive charm: islands dotted with shrubs, metasequoia trees standing in water, reeds covering tidal flats, waterfowl and herons soaring overhead, golden sand paired with clear blue water, mixed with croaking frogs and chirping birds. The original ecological scenery is stunning, just like an earthly paradise.
Sixth Patriarch Temple
Built along a central symmetrical axis, the temple complex unites the main gate, front hall, rear hall, plus flanking side rooms, covered corridors and alleys. Surrounded by steep mountains, the temple enjoys a pleasant natural setting.
