As a national key scenic area, Fairy Lake is located in Xinyu City, western Jiangxi Province. It gets its name from the myth of the "Feather-Clad Fairy Maiden" descending to Xinyu of Yuzhang Prefecture, recorded in Records of the Search for Spirits by Gan Bao, a litterateur of the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
The scenic area stands at the intersection of two major tourist routes in Jiangxi: Sanqing Mountain — Longhu Mountain — Nanchang — Fairy Lake — Pingxiang and Lushan Mountain — Poyang Lake — Nanchang — Fairy Lake — Jinggang Mountain — Ganzhou, enjoying an advantageous geographical location.
Fairy Lake is divided into five scenic zones: Wolong Lake, Zhongshan Gorge, Qianyang Lake, Dagang Mountain and Jiulong Bay. It is home to abundant cultural relics, including ancient karst caves, historic buildings, the underwater ancient city, ancient tombs, stone carvings, classic literary works, revolutionary heritage sites and traditional fishing village customs.
This land is the birthplace of the earliest documented version of the legend The Heavenly Match, Lu Zhao (the first top scholar in Jiangxi's imperial examinations), Yan Song (the powerful grand secretary of the Ming Dynasty), Exploitation of the Works of Nature (a masterpiece of ancient science and technology), and Fu Baoshi (a great modern Chinese painting master).
Fairy Lake features a typical subtropical climate with four distinct seasons, ample sunshine, abundant rainfall and a long frost-free period. The annual average temperature stays around 17°C.
Endowed with stunning natural scenery, it is best known for its green mountains, clear waters and the harmonious blend of lake and sky. The area is home to over 3,000 plant species across 230 families, including more than 200 rare tree species, with a forest coverage rate exceeding 95%. The lake water meets the Grade II standard for surface water, with a visibility of over 2 meters. The sound ecosystem sustains diverse wildlife: 37 species of mammals such as deer, foxes and monkeys, and 39 species of birds including eagles, falcons, wild geese, egrets and turtledoves.
