What Fun Places Are There to Visit in Dongguan?
Dongguan is a land of heroes. The First Opium War opened the first chapter of China’s modern history. It boasts world-famous historic battle sites against British invaders including Lin Zexu’s Opium Destruction Ponds, Shajiao Fort and Weiyuan Fort, as well as patriotic education bases such as the Opium War Museum and Naval Battle Museum. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, this area served as the revolutionary base of the Dongjiang people. The Dalingshan Anti-Japanese War Exhibition Hall and Liuhua Anti-Japanese Memorial Pavilion draw numerous visitors to pay their respects.
Dongguan abounds in cultural and historical landmarks: Jin’aozhou Pagoda, Liuhua Pagoda, Keyuan Garden (one of the Four Great Classical Gardens of Guangdong), and the ancient Huangqi Temple, to name a few. It also boasts stunning natural scenery: Xian’e Lake, Yanling Ridge in Shipai, Green World Resort, Qingxi Landscape Paradise, as well as charming coastal views at the Pearl River Estuary, endless rice paddies and banana groves, red lychees blooming alongside fragrant lotus ponds, and the magnificent Qifeng Scenic Area.
Shajiao Fort
A historic battlefield relic of the First Opium War. Perched on Shajiao Mountain at the Humen Estuary, its construction began in the fifth year of the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty (1801). During the Opium War, Shajiao Fort and Dajiao Fort formed the first line of defense at the Humen waterway, known as the primary coastal stronghold of Guangdong.
Naval Battle Museum
Located near Weiyuan Fort at the Humen Estuary, it is a museum integrating thematic exhibition halls and original historical sites. Covering a total land area of 204,000 square metres with a construction area of around 10,000 square metres, the complex consists of an exhibition building, an oath-taking square and a long sea-view embankment. It constitutes a core component of the patriotic education base at Humen Forts and ranks among China’s three major national anti-drug education bases.
Weiyuan Fort
Situated on Weiyuan Island in Humen Town, it is one of the major battlefield sites of the First Opium War and the key defensive stronghold guarding the Humen Estuary. It is also one of China’s best-preserved and largest ancient coastal forts.
Songshan Lake: Misty Lake Serenity
Songshan Lake spans a water surface of 8 square kilometres, ringed by rolling hills. Mist shrouds the vast lake surface as water birds chirp softly. After rain, rainbows stretch across the sky amid rosy cloud vapours. The scenic spot’s name “Misty Lake Serenity” highlights its breathtaking vistas at dawn and post-rain rainbow hours, symbolizing a promising bright future for Songshan Lake.
Dongguan Botanical Garden & Shuilianshan Forest Park: Verdant Ridges in Bloom
Dongguan Botanical Garden and Shuilianshan Forest Park form a connected scenic zone in the southern suburbs of the city. The area features crystal-clear streams, lush woodlands, singing birds and blooming flowers, presenting magnificent natural landscapes.
Opium War Museum
Built on the actual battlefield of the First Opium War, the museum leans against Niubeiji Mountain to the east and faces the Pearl River Estuary to the west. It is a specialized museum dedicated to collecting, displaying and researching cultural relics and historical documents concerning Lin Zexu’s opium ban campaign and the First Opium War.
Green World Resort
The resort is blanketed with dense green trees and filled with birdsong and floral fragrance, offering gorgeous natural scenery. Its most famous attraction is the Bird Forest, an enclosed sub-park featuring large-scale bird observation areas and avian talent shows.
Keyuan Garden
Located in West Boxia Village in downtown Dongguan, Keyuan Garden is one of the Four Great Classical Gardens of the Qing Dynasty in Guangdong and an iconic masterpiece of Lingnan garden architecture. Ancient literati praised it: “A blessed mortal paradise to admire, a garden rivalling celestial palaces above.” In 2001, the State Council designated it a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.
Yinxian Villa
The hometown of Li Juesi, a virtuous minister of the Ming Dynasty. Nestled in Licheng Development Zone, Changping Town, Yinxian Mountain covers over 500,000 square metres and serves as a large-scale cultural entertainment, tourism and holiday resort in Dongguan.
