Where Are Great Spots for Spring Outings in Dongguan?
As spring arrives in the third lunar month, all living things revive. Golden rapeseed flowers, snow-white pear blossoms, pink peach blossoms and a riot of other hues paint the landscape with vivid, vibrant charm.
Bright Kapok Flowers – Dongguan’s Iconic Spring Bloom Under Warm Sunny Skies
Viewing Spots: Dongjiang Avenue, Shijing Road in Dongcheng District, Songshan Lake New City Avenue, etc.
Kapok trees line many streets across Dongguan. They burst into bloom every February and March as temperatures rise. After the flowering season, the trees bear seed pods that release fluffy cotton fibres. Visitors allergic to the fluff should keep their distance to avoid rashes, asthma and other allergic reactions.
Kapok flowers also carry valuable medicinal properties. When they are in full bloom, many elderly locals in Dongguan gather under kapok trees with bags to collect fallen blossoms for herbal soups at home.
In March, Songshan Lake is draped in fiery red kapok blooms. Bright kapok trees line not only New City Avenue but countless roads throughout the scenic zone.
Several tall kapok trees at the intersection of Sanyuan Road in Nancheng District are fully blossomed, their vivid scarlet and orange-red blooms signalling the arrival of spring to passersby.
Along the Zhangcun stretch of Dongjiang Avenue stands an over 800-year-old kapok tree, the oldest of its kind in Dongguan. It stands 12 metres tall (over four storeys high), with a trunk circumference of 4.6 metres and an average crown width of 8 metres.
Shijing Road in Dongcheng boasts a one-kilometre kapok-lined boulevard that unfolds breathtaking beauty when the trees are in full flower.
Peach Blossoms
Peach blooms smile gently over garden fences, most enchanting when half-open and half-budded.
Viewing Spots: Songshan Lake Taoyuan Park, Majyong Ten-Mile Peach Grove
The peach tree is a classic ornamental plant in traditional Chinese gardens. It features graceful branches, plump, vivid blossoms and ranks among the key early-spring flowering trees. Peaches yield famous edible fruit; peach kernels can be pressed for oil; its twigs, leaves, fruit and roots all serve medicinal purposes; its dense, solid timber is ideal for carving.
Golden Trumpet Tree
Clusters of golden blooms dazzle the eye, delicate petals drift down with soft breezes.
Viewing Spots: Near Holding Building, Taoyuan Park, Songhu Lake Flower Sea, Xinyuan Road in Dongcheng District, etc.
Golden trumpet trees shift their appearance with the four seasons. In spring, their branches bear sparse leaves and bloom with striking golden flowers around the Qingming Festival. In summer, foliage grows thick and seed pods form. Autumn brings lush, emerald canopies. Winter leaves the bare twisted branches, exuding a quiet, sombre beauty — each season reveals a unique charm of this tree.
Bauhinia Flowers
No need to wait for blooms; vibrant purple and pink bauhinia flowers greet the coming of spring.
Viewing Spots: Around the three universities in Songshan Lake, Xueyuan Road, North Xinhe Road, Huangqi Mountain, etc.
Tall bauhinia trees are a common sight along Dongguan’s streets. In early spring, pink flower buds climb the branches and slowly unfurl. Resembling fluttering butterflies in shape, the blossoms look like colourful butterflies dancing from afar. Bauhinia blooms come in varied shades: romantic purple, bashful pink and pure white. Their falling petals attract crowds of onlookers and photographers.
Mucuna Birdwoodii (Bird Cherry Blossoms)
A unique southern Chinese flower, blooming abundantly from mid-March
Viewing Spots: Dawang Mountain Forest Park in Qingxi Town, Wanjiang Riverside Sports Park, etc.
Each March and April, heavily scented mucuna birdwoodii hang in long cascading clusters from twisting vines, resembling flocks of rice sparrows in flight. This exclusive southern bloom surprises many out-of-town visitors with its distinctive form.
Every individual flower mimics a tiny sparrow, complete with a head, beak, wings and tail. Brown fine fuzz on the calyx looks just like the bird’s small eyes. The flower clusters dangle directly from gnarled ancient vines; viewed from a distance, they look like thousands of birds perched on branches.
The 8th Flower Viewing Festival will be held at Dawang Mountain Forest Park in Qingxi Town from March 16 to April 15. One of Dongguan’s top flower-watching destinations, the park is home to a pair of “King and Queen Vines” over 300 years old, plus more than 50 flowering vines with trunks wider than 70 centimetres around.
If you do not wish to travel all the way to Qingxi, head to Wanjiang Riverside Sports Park to admire the blooms instead. Note that the flowering period is extremely short — do not delay your visit, or you will have to wait another year.
Cosmos Flowers
A 30,000-square-metre sea of blooms from March to July
Viewing Spot: Qianhu Valley on Liyuzhou Island, Shipai Town
Cosmos flowers, also known as Gesang flowers, carry symbolic meaning in Tibetan language: “gesang” translates to “auspicious time” or “happiness”, and “meiduo” means flower. Thus they are also called happiness flowers, embodying the Tibetan people’s timeless wish for joy and good fortune.
Qianhu Valley on Liyuzhou Island in Shipai Town is planted with vast stretches of cosmos. Thanks to staggered rotational planting, flowers remain in full bloom all the way through July.
