The full name of the Yellow River Altar is China Yellow River Altar, also known as the Sacred Altar of the Yellow River. As a landmark along the Golden Bank of the Yellow River, it is situated in Qingtongxia City, Wuzhong, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
Constructed to pay homage to, worship and express gratitude to the Yellow River, the project broke ground in May 2010 and was completed by late April 2011. The overall design was undertaken by Professor Feng Qinduo.
The altar stretches 999 meters in length and 200 meters in width, with a total floor area of 65,000 square meters. Nestled against the Helan Mountains, it faces the Niushou Mountain across the river. To its left lies the meandering Yellow River, and to its right stands the entrance to the Qingtong Gorge. Overlooking the scenery from the altar, the river and surrounding floodplains form a perfect Tai Chi Eight Trigrams pattern.
On May 8, 2011, the China Yellow River Altar made its debut at the "Gratitude to the Mother River" activity of the 3rd China (Ningxia) International Cultural, Art and Tourism Expo.
