Local Specialties of Shizuishan
Chinese Wolfberry
The Chinese wolfberry is a woody plant. Its bright red berries are spindle-shaped, resembling pieces of red agate. Originally a wild plant native to Zhongning and Zhongwei areas, it was selectively bred and improved by local people in Ningxia over generations and eventually developed into a cultivated crop.
As a time-honored export product of Ningxia, it is famous at home and abroad for its thin peel, thick flesh and few seeds. It was designated as a tribute fruit back in the Ming Dynasty.
Ningxia Carpets
Woven from high-quality wool abundant in Ningxia, these carpets feature bright colors, soft texture and good elasticity. Antique-style carpets and art carpets are the most renowned varieties.
The classic 107-weft antique carpet of Ningxia is handmade from premium wool with special plant-based dyes and processed via chemical washing. Its patterns and formulas draw on ancient carpet designs from different Chinese dynasties. With an antique, elegant and understated style, it boasts high artistic and practical value.
Helan Stone
Helan stone is quarried from the Helan Mountains in Ningxia. It has a fine, balanced texture with interlaced purple and green hues. Ink slabs carved from Helan stone excel at grinding and retaining ink — the ink stays moist and odorless, and the brush hair is well protected. The natural interplay of dark green and pea green creates an innate refined charm.
Apart from two-tone, three-tone and multi-tone patterns, the stone also features unique natural formations such as stone eyes, jade belts, silver veins and cloud grain. Craftsmen carve diverse and exquisite ink slabs by adapting designs to the stone’s natural shapes.
In history, Helan ink slabs enjoyed equal fame with Duan and She ink slabs. As early as the Qing Dynasty, there was a popular saying: "Duan ranks first, She second and Helan third". It is not only an essential stationery item among the Four Treasures of the Study, but also a valuable craft collectible.
Licorice
Ningxia has long been known as the hometown of licorice. It grows in arid and semi-arid desert grasslands and hilly areas across Yanchi, Tongxin, Lingwu, Zhongning and other regions. The local low rainfall, ample sunshine, moderate temperature and deep soil endow the licorice with unique properties. Known as Western Authentic Licorice in the medical field, it is equally famous as the Liangwai Licorice from the Inner Mongolia grasslands.
Ningxia licorice is characterized by firm roots, rich powder content, straight stems and elaborate processing. It works to detoxify the body, relieve phlegm, soothe pain and spasms, and fight cancer. It also invigorates the spleen and qi, nourishes yin and moisturizes the lungs, alleviates acute discomforts and harmonizes various medicinal ingredients.
Tan Sheep Fur
Tan sheep fur is a renowned fur product of Ningxia. The Tan sheep gets its name from the fertile river flats along the Yellow River on the Yinchuan Plain.
Locally called Two-Wool Fur, it is made from lamb skins collected when the lambs are around 30 days old, after elaborate processing. The wool is about two inches long, soft, pure white and naturally wavy, while the hide is tough, lightweight and warm. Praised as the "Thousand-Gold Fur" in ancient times, it is one of China’s traditional famous export commodities
