Dawukou Young Rooster is a geographical indication product native to Dawukou District, Shizuishan City, Ningxia. Located at the foot of the Helan Mountains, Dawukou boasts hundreds of mountain springs with large flow and high-quality water, serving as a major water source. It is also a key agricultural area with high grain and vegetable yields. Abundant feed and premium spring water create superior conditions for chicken farming. Local young roosters are renowned for their pure aroma and tender meat across Dawukou and Yinchuan.
The breeding of Dawukou young roosters dates back to the early 1980s. To expand the industry, the local industrial and commercial authority encouraged the professional farming cooperative in Xingmin Village to register two trademarks, effectively boosting the added value of this geographical indication product.
By 2012, the village had two professional cooperatives with 50 member households. Each household raised 20,000 roosters annually, doubled from the original 10,000. The sales price rose from 15 yuan to 35 yuan per bird. Online trading was launched via rural broker websites, helping the product expand markets beyond Shizuishan and Ningxia.
In the early 21st century, the product was in short supply with rising market demand. Its market coverage exceeded 70% in Dawukou and Yinchuan, with an annual output value of 3.4 million yuan
