Maitreya Giant Buddha

This is a natural sitting Maitreya Buddha entirely formed by a whole mountain massif. The Buddha sits on the mountain peak opposite Nanquan Nunnery, one of the well-known ancient temples on Qianshan Mountain.

The Buddha statue stands 70 meters tall, with shoulders spanning 46 meters. Its head is 9.9 meters high and 11.8 meters wide, and its ears stretch 4.8 meters long. All facial features and limbs are fully defined. The Buddha’s left hand rests naturally on its knee with fingers spread open, while its right hand is clenched into a fist and laid upon its right thigh. Facing west with its back to the east, faint prayer beads can be seen draped across its chest, and a natural cave on its torso forms the Buddha’s navel. Research verifies that it took shape roughly 100 million years ago. Sacrificial vessels dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties were unearthed at the foot of the Buddha.

A consecration ceremony for the giant Buddha was held in 1993. Zhao Puchu, then Chairman of the Buddhist Association of China, personally inscribed the characters "Qianshan Maitreya Giant Buddha". This further elevated Qianshan, a place with profound religious and cultural heritage, to a sacred Buddhist site in Northeast China.
