Qingyan Temple is situated in Changxingdian Town, Beizhen City, Liaoning Province, at the southern foot of Yiwulu Mountain, covering an area of 13 square kilometres.
First built in the Northern Wei Dynasty and flourishing in the mid-Tang Dynasty, the temple boasts a history of more than 1,500 years with endless streams of pilgrims all year round. It was officially approved as a religious activity site by the provincial government in 1986. This renowned scenic area integrates religion and tourism, where natural scenery and cultural landscapes complement each other perfectly. The Eight Grand Sights and Twelve Wonders present spectacular views.
The temple complex consists of the Upper Courtyard, Middle Courtyard, Lower Courtyard, Manjushri Courtyard, Goddess Hall, Medicine Buddha Hall, God of Wealth Hall, Holy Water Courtyard and Guanyin Hall. The most famous attraction is the Statue of the Crooked-Neck Goddess enshrined in the Upper Courtyard, which is celebrated nationwide.
According to Legends of Ancient Sites in Northeast China:
"When the tide receded on the South China Sea, a bluestone Buddha statue emerged. Workers moved the statue to an ancient cave hidden in the clouds on Qingyan Mountain, yet the figure was too tall to pass through the gate. One worker joked: 'If the old Buddha could just tilt its neck, we could get it inside.' The moment the words were spoken, the statue’s neck crooked. Stunned, the workers carried the statue into the cave without difficulty. Awed by this divine manifestation, everyone bowed respectfully and left in silence. They forgot to straighten the Buddha’s neck, so it remains crooked to this day."
The Crooked-Neck Goddess is one of the thirty-two incarnations of Guanyin Bodhisattva.
The temple underwent renovations in the 4th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty and the 16th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty.
After 2002, more attractions were added, including the Slope of Five Hundred Arhats, the Slope of Three Hundred Arhats, the Hand of Guanyin, relief murals of the Twenty-Four Filial Piety Stories, relief murals depicting the legend of the Crooked-Neck Goddess, stone carvings of the Heart Sutra, the auspicious white elephant, the giant Maitreya Buddha, Patriarch Bodhidharma, leisure arhat sculptures and the God of Longevity.
From ancient times to the present, people have worshipped Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and cherished famous mountains and rivers, and Qingyan Temple offers an ideal destination for such spiritual travel.
In recent years, countless tourists and pilgrims come here every single day. Crowds reach their peak on temple fairs held on the 19th day of the second, sixth and ninth lunar months, on public holidays including New Year's Day, the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, May Day and National Day, as well as on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month, weekends and Buddhist festivals.
