This is the site of the secluded refuge from the Qin Dynasty described in The Peach Blossom Spring, a masterpiece by Tao Yuanming, the great poet of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Known to later generations as the authentic "Land of Peach Blossoms," it has a history of over 1,600 years.
Renowned worldwide for its stunning landscapes, magnificent temples and pavilions, rich poetic inscriptions, and fascinating legends, it holds high value for tourism, history, culture, and art. A product of China’s historical and cultural evolution, it stands as a testament to the world’s seclusion culture, representing a facet of Chinese civilization and shining with the light of human heritage.
The Peach Blossom Spring was founded in the Jin Dynasty, flourished in the Tang, reached its peak in the Song, suffered extensive destruction in the Yuan, and alternated between prosperity and decline in the Ming and Qing. Historically, it was one of China’s Four Great Sacred Taoist Sites, alongside Emei, Wudang, and Nanyue, honored as the 35th Cave Heaven and 46th Blessed Land. It integrates Nuo, Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
For centuries, it has attracted scholars and tourists alike. Literary giants including Tao Yuanming, Meng Haoran, Wang Changling, Wang Wei, Li Bai, Du Mu, Liu Yuxi, Han Yu, Lu You, and Su Shi left precious poems and calligraphy here. After the founding of the People’s Republic, Party and state leaders visited and cared for the site many times. On March 24, 1995, former President Jiang Zemin inspected the Peach Blossom Spring. After examining its cultural and historical landscapes, he confirmed: "This is the Peach Blossom Spring described by Tao Yuanming," and inscribed a commemorative message.
